Chapter 9 - The Hearing Without a Performance

The temporary-family hearing was not dramatic.

That surprised me.

No shouting.

No surprise witness bursting through doors.

Scott wore a navy suit.

He looked like the man who handled insurance calls and remembered birthdays.

That mattered.

People who hurt family do not arrive with labels.

My attorney focused on temporary living arrangements, communication, and Grace's contact.

Scott's lawyer focused on my treatment, fatigue, and emotional state.

I felt the old urge to sit perfectly straight.

Look healthy.

Look calm.

Prove cancer had not made me unreliable.

Rachel touched my folder.

A reminder.

I did not need to perform wellness.

When asked whether I was still undergoing treatment, I said yes.

Whether I experienced nausea, fatigue, and occasional concentration problems.

Yes.

Whether that meant I could not make decisions.

No.

Dr. Kent's written statement said the same.

Scott's attorney asked about the draft divorce email.

"You were planning to leave before the alleged assault?"

"Yes."

The word alleged hurt.

Still yes.

"So you had motive to reinterpret ordinary caregiving as abuse."

Rachel objected.

The judge redirected.

I breathed.

Scott testified that he had been overwhelmed.

That I resisted eating.

That I became angry.

That he worried I would fall.

Some of it was true.

Then he said:

"I never tried to control her. I tried to keep her alive."

For one awful second, I wanted to believe him.

That was the danger.

The same sentence could contain love and control.

Then my mind returned to the trash can.

His finger on the surgical area.

Tell the nurse cancer did it.

Not caregiving.

The temporary order left Grace with me at Molly's while allowing professionally supervised contact with Scott only when Grace agreed to attend.

Neither parent could use Grace to gather information about the other.

Scott was ordered to communicate through the parenting app.

No access to my medical portal.

No authority over my care.

Administrative boundaries again.

Outside court, reporters were not waiting.

Thank God.

We were not famous.

This was one family on a gray Wednesday.

Elaine waited near the elevators.

Scott saw her.

"Mom?"

She looked at him.

"I love you."

Scott's face softened.

Then Elaine continued.

"And I believe Natalie when she says you hurt her."

His face closed.

"She's gotten to you too."

Elaine shook her head.

"No. I finally heard the sentence without correcting it."

Scott walked away.

Elaine started crying.

I did not comfort her.

Molly did.

Different jobs.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Erin.

Thinking of you. No need to answer.

I smiled.

No demand.

No explanation.

No need to perform recovery for the person who had first asked whether I wanted her to stay.
