Chapter 17 - The Clock Said 6:12
On the third anniversary of the assault, I noticed the clock at 6:12 p.m.
I was cooking pasta.
David was chopping basil.
Grace was upstairs yelling at a friend through a headset.
Nothing happened.
That startled me.
For two years, six twelve had lived in my body.
The time Erin came back.
The time I said yes.
The time Scott blocked the door.
I used to think survival divided life into before and after.
It didn't.
Mostly it blurred.
Then one day a clock became a clock again.
David asked why I was staring at the stove.
"Nothing."
Then I corrected myself.
"A memory."
He waited.
I told him.
He did not say everything happens for a reason.
Thank God.
He said:
"Do you want me to keep chopping?"
I laughed.
"Yes."
There it was again.
Yes.
A normal yes.
Not rescue.
Not evidence.
Just basil.
Grace came downstairs.
"Dad says he's coming to graduation with Grandma."
"Okay."
"David too?"
"If you want."
"I want everybody."
I felt a flicker of anxiety.
Grace saw.
"You can sit far apart."
"Thank you, event planner."
At graduation, Scott sat three rows behind me.
Elaine beside him.
David beside Molly.
Erin came because Grace had invited her.
When Grace crossed the stage, all of us stood.
For one strange second I saw the entire mess from outside.
The husband who hurt me.
His mother who loved him and still believed me.
The nurse who forgot a bag.
The sister he had isolated me from.
The man I dated later.
All applauding the same girl.
No one owned the moment.
Afterward Scott approached me only after making eye contact and waiting.
"Can I say something?"
I nodded.
"You did a good job with her."
My first instinct was to return the compliment.
Balance.
Then I stopped.
"Thank you."
That was all.
Scott smiled sadly.
Then walked away.
No debt created.
