Chapter 5 - The Funeral They Wanted Quiet

Eleanor wanted Lily buried on Thursday at 8:00 a.m.
No press.
No employees.
No hospital staff.
No mention of the treatment delay.
She sent the proposal through Adrian's lawyer as though she were scheduling a board lunch.
I rejected it.
Lily's memorial was Saturday afternoon.
I invited everyone who had cared for her.
Nurses.
Respiratory therapists.
Dr. Keene.
The janitor who used to draw cats on her whiteboard because Lily thought his ears looked funny.
I invited the home-care nurse whose hours the Vance portal repeatedly tried to cut.
I even invited Marisol.
She did not answer.
The Vances arrived together in black cars.
Eleanor walked in first.
Claire beside her.
Adrian behind them.
Celeste did not come.
For that small mercy, I was grateful.
At the front of the chapel stood Lily's photograph.
Three years old.
Yellow dress.
Two missing front teeth she had been proud of even though they were supposed to stay longer.
Her urn sat beneath the picture.
Adrian stopped when he saw it.
He had not entered Lily's room since that first night.
Now there was nowhere else to look.
During the service, Dr. Keene spoke about her courage.
He did not mention the authorization delay.
He did not need to.
When it was my turn, I stood at the podium and unfolded one sheet of paper.
I had written six pages the night before.
I used none of them.
"Lily loved strawberries, purple socks, ceiling fans, and people who let her press elevator buttons. She hated peas, blood-pressure cuffs, and any adult who said 'just a little pinch.'"
A few people laughed through tears.
I looked at the Vance family.
"She also believed every problem could be fixed if you found the right grown-up."
Adrian lowered his eyes.
"I hope she died still believing that."
That was all.
Afterward, people lined up to speak to me.
Eleanor did not.
She waited until the chapel was nearly empty.
Then she approached.
"You made that deliberately accusatory."
I looked at her.
"I said strawberries and elevator buttons. Which part felt like an accusation?"
Her mouth tightened.
"Do you enjoy humiliating us?"
"No."
"Then stop this investigation."
"No."
"You think your father gave you power. What he gave you was paper. We built Vance Meridian."
"Then you should not be afraid of an audit."
She leaned closer.
"You have no idea what happens to thousands of employees if you destabilize that company."
That landed because it was the first intelligent threat anyone had made.
Three thousand employees.
Drivers.
Warehouse crews.
Office staff.
Families who had nothing to do with Adrian's decision or Eleanor's transfers.
I did not want revenge that crushed innocent people.
Eleanor saw the hesitation.
She smiled.
"Your father taught you numbers. Let me teach you consequence."
A voice behind her said, "Mrs. Vance?"
We turned.
Marisol stood near the back pew.
She looked exhausted.
Her hair was tied badly. No makeup. No designer handbag.
Just a black coat and fear.
Eleanor's expression changed.
"You should not be here."
Marisol looked at me.
"I need to talk to Vivian."
Eleanor stepped toward her.
"Not today."
Marisol backed away.
"I said Vivian."
Raymond appeared from the side aisle with one of his investigators.
Eleanor stopped moving.
Marisol reached into her coat.
Claire gasped.
The investigator shifted instantly.
But Marisol only pulled out a small flash drive.
"This is everything I saved before they locked me out."
I took it.
"Why now?"
Her eyes went to Lily's photograph.
"Because I kept telling myself I was only processing requests."
She started crying.
"Then I heard she died."
Eleanor's voice cut through the chapel.
"Marisol, you signed a confidentiality agreement."
Marisol turned toward her.
"I also signed a sworn certification that medical approvals were independent of executive compensation."
Raymond's face changed.
"Were they?"
Marisol looked at me.
"No."
Then she said the sentence that made Eleanor stop breathing.
"And I have the recording where Mrs. Vance told us to keep Lily's request pending until the lender meeting was over."
