Chapter 11 - The Notary

The notary was named Paul Brennan.
He was sixty-three, semi-retired, and lived in Indiana.
According to the forged postnuptial agreement, he had watched me sign the document in Chicago two years earlier.
The problem was that Paul Brennan had been in federal prison that week.
Mina found it in eleven minutes.
Tax fraud.
Six-month sentence.
Release date four weeks after my alleged signature.
Raymond stared at the screen.
"That is almost insulting."
"Maybe they never expected anyone to examine it," I said.
"People who control access often confuse lack of challenge with quality of work."
We sent the prison record to Adrian's lawyers.
One withdrew from representing the family within the hour.
The second demanded to know who had given him the document.
Claire stopped answering calls.
Then Celeste made her mistake.
She tried to leave the country.
Customs officers stopped her at O'Hare because federal investigators had already flagged her passport for questioning related to the Cayman transfer.
She was not arrested.
Not yet.
But her phone was seized under warrant.
By Saturday night, prosecutors had messages tying Hale Strategies to offshore accounts, political consultants, and personal expenses for Eleanor and Claire.
Adrian had received some of the messages.
He had ignored the obvious ones.
That became his pattern.
He rarely ordered the worst act.
He simply benefited from not asking.
At 1:00 a.m., Raymond called me.
"We have a problem."
"What now?"
"The compliance mirror stopped receiving data."
I sat up.
"Someone cut the feed?"
"Yes. And the main Vance servers are deleting archived trust files in real time."
Court order or not, somebody was trying to erase history.
Raymond's forensic team had remote access to the mirror, but the newest forty-eight hours lived only on-site.
Those forty-eight hours included records of the Cayman transfer and internal discussions after our notice.
We called the court-appointed preservation monitor.
At 2:10 a.m., the monitor, Raymond, Mina, and I entered Vance Meridian headquarters with a sheriff's deputy and an emergency order.
The lobby security guards refused to let us pass.
The deputy showed the order.
One guard called Eleanor.
The answer came fast.
"Building closed for security incident."
The deputy looked at him.
"The court is the security incident now. Open the gate."
We reached the data floor on twenty-three.
The server room alarms were sounding.
A systems administrator stood near a terminal sweating through his shirt.
"I was told to run an archival maintenance script."
"By whom?" Mina asked.
"Executive admin account."
She looked at the screen.
Username: AVANCE_ADMIN.
Adrian.
I felt the old anger rise.
Then the administrator shook his head.
"It wasn't him."
"How do you know?"
"Login came from a device on the executive residential VPN."
"Which residence?"
He pulled the log.
Lake Forest estate.
I had left the estate empty.
Or thought I had.
Police were dispatched.
Inside the server room, Mina stopped the deletion script with less than seven minutes before it would have reached the current-quarter trust archive.
We copied everything.
At 3:02 a.m., my phone rang.
Lake Forest police.
They had found someone inside the estate.
Not Adrian.
Not Eleanor.
Not Claire.
Celeste Hale's younger brother, Mason, was sitting in Adrian's home office with a Vance security token plugged into the computer.
And in his pocket was a key to Lily's bedroom.
