Chapter 14 - Celeste’s Price

Celeste wanted immunity, a new identity, and protection from civil claims.

The prosecutors offered none of those things.

They offered to consider cooperation.

So she cooperated.

Her phone contained three years of messages that made everybody's memory improve suddenly.

Eleanor had used Hale Strategies to route political consulting expenses, luxury travel, family purchases, and at least one payment tied to the port contract.

Claire had drafted fake vendor descriptions.

Adrian had approved invoices while asking fewer questions than a reasonable CEO should have asked.

And Celeste had taken millions in fees for being the person nobody wanted to put on official paperwork.

Her affair with Adrian began after the arrangement was already in place.

That somehow made it uglier.

She had been paid first.

Loved later.

If love was the word.

Celeste asked to speak to me.

I refused twice.

The third request came through Raymond.

"She says she has information about Lily."

I went.

The interview room was plain gray.

Celeste wore no jewelry.

Her face looked younger without the armor.

She stared at me as I sat down.

"I am sorry about Lily."

"Do not use her name to warm up the conversation."

She swallowed.

"Fine."

"What do you know?"

"The day you came to Adrian's office, he was supposed to meet you downstairs."

I remembered.

Five hours in the lobby.

Then Adrian appearing with Celeste.

"He told me he was going to approve the medication," she continued.

My hands went cold.

"When?"

"Around noon. He said the request was annoying but he'd clear it."

"Then why didn't he?"

Celeste looked down.

"Eleanor called."

Of course.

"What did she say?"

"I heard his side. He said, 'She's my daughter.' Then, 'Friday is too late.' Then he got quiet."

"And after the call?"

"He said his mother would handle it."

I closed my eyes.

Celeste continued.

"That evening, he was upset. I told him to go home."

I stared at her.

"You told my husband to go home to his sick daughter?"

"Yes."

"Did he?"

She shook her head.

I laughed.

It came out like something breaking.

Even his mistress had understood the assignment better than he did.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because they're going to say I controlled him. I didn't. Adrian made choices. Eleanor made choices. Claire made choices. I made mine."

At least she knew that much.

Then she slid a photocopy across the table.

A handwritten note from Eleanor.

AV—hold until lender close. VH escalating emotionally. Do not let hospital bypass family office.

VH.

Vivian Hart before marriage.

I stared at the line.

"Where did you get this?"

"Eleanor gave me a folder to destroy. I photographed everything first."

"Why?"

"Insurance."

Of course.

Everybody in that family understood insurance when it protected themselves.

I stood.

Celeste said, "There's more."

I stopped.

"Adrian did something after he learned Lily died."

I turned.

"What?"

"He ordered Marisol to approve every pending pediatric request in the trust."

I stared at her.

"Why?"

"He said, 'I will not let this happen twice.'"

For one brutal second, I saw the father he could have been one day too late.

Then Celeste added, "And Eleanor reversed the approvals thirty minutes later."

That night, prosecutors arrested Eleanor Vance.

Not for Lily's death.

For conspiracy, wire fraud, obstruction, and the port-payment scheme.

As officers led her from her Gold Coast hotel, cameras crowded the sidewalk.

A reporter shouted, "Mrs. Vance, did you delay your granddaughter's medical care to protect a refinancing?"

Eleanor stopped.

She turned toward the cameras.

And she said, "The child was already sick."

That sentence ended whatever sympathy the public had left for her.
