Chapter 2: The Fake Pregnancy

Jake helped me to my feet, but I could see the doubt in his eyes.

“Sophie, this is insane,” he said. “Mia’s been my best friend since college. She would never—”

“Never what?” I snapped, still dizzy. “Drug me? Lock me in a warehouse? Lie about being pregnant?”

Mia started crying. “Jake, she’s clearly having some kind of breakdown. I showed you the ultrasound. It’s real.”

Jake pulled out his phone and showed me a sonogram picture. My stomach dropped.

I looked at Mia. “You’re really going to do this? Destroy us just so you can have him?”

Mia’s tears vanished for a second, replaced by pure hatred. “You never deserved him. I’ve loved him for years. While you were busy with your little career, I was the one who was always there for him.”

Jake stepped back, looking sick. “Mia… what are you saying?”

She grabbed his arm. “I’m saying this baby needs a father. And I need you. Sophie can move on. She’s strong.”

I laughed bitterly through my tears. “Strong? I just spent hours locked in a dark warehouse because of you!”

Jake looked at Mia’s belly, then at me. The doubt was killing me.

Cliffhanger: That night, Jake received a call from the hospital. Mia had “fallen” and was in the ER. When they arrived, the doctor pulled Jake aside and said quietly, “There’s no pregnancy. She’s not pregnant. Never was.”
