MY FAMILY THREW ME OUT AFTER MY HUSBAND DIED... THEY DIDN'T KNOW HE LEFT EVERYTHING TO ME
CHAPTER 1: THE FUNERAL
"You need to leave by Friday."
Emily Parker slowly turned toward her mother-in-law.
"What?"
Three hours.
Her husband, James, had been buried only three hours ago.
And now his family was already throwing her out.
Margaret Parker crossed her arms.
"This house has belonged to the Parker family for generations."
Emily looked around the living room in disbelief.
"James and I lived here for twelve years."
Margaret shrugged.
"And James is gone."
Emily couldn't even process what she was hearing.
Her husband had died suddenly in a car accident five days earlier.
She still hadn't stopped crying.
Yet somehow, his family had already moved on.
James's younger brother, Brian, stepped forward.
"Mom's right, Emily."
Emily stared at him.
"You can't be serious."
Brian sighed.
"Look, James was the one who brought money into the marriage."
Emily felt sick.
For twelve years, she had supported James while he built his business.
She had worked two jobs.
Skipped vacations.
Sold her jewelry when the company nearly failed.
Now they were acting as if she were a stranger.
Margaret handed her a box.
"Start packing."
Emily looked inside.
Her belongings had already been packed for her.
She couldn't believe it.
"You packed my things?"
Margaret's expression hardened.
"You have no children. There's nothing keeping you here."
Emily burst into tears.
"I just buried my husband!"
Margaret didn't react.
"We've all suffered."
Emily looked toward her sister-in-law, Lisa.
Surely someone would defend her.
Lisa looked away.
No one spoke.
Finally, Emily quietly nodded.
"Fine."
She grabbed her coat and left.
As she reached the front door, a voice echoed behind her.
"Mrs. Parker?"
Everyone turned.
A man in a dark suit stood in the doorway.
"Who are you?" Margaret demanded.
The man adjusted his glasses.
"My name is Richard Lawson."
He opened a leather briefcase.
"I'm here to read James Parker's will."
Margaret smiled for the first time all day.
"Perfect timing."
Brian grinned.
"Looks like things are about to be settled."
Richard looked confused.
"Actually... according to Mr. Parker's instructions, the reading must happen immediately."
Everyone sat down.
Emily reluctantly stayed.
Richard opened the file.
"The entirety of James Parker's estate, including Parker Technologies, all real estate holdings, investment accounts, and personal assets..."
Margaret smiled confidently.
"...shall pass to my beloved wife, Emily Parker."
Silence.
Complete silence.
Margaret slowly stood up.
"What?"
Richard continued reading.
"To my mother and siblings, I leave one dollar each."
Brian exploded.
"This is a joke!"
Richard calmly shook his head.
"It is legally binding."
Margaret's face turned red.
"James would never do this."
Richard slowly looked up.
"He did."
Then he added:
May you like
"And he included a letter explaining why."
