EPILOGUE
"One Year Later"
One year later, the house sounded like a home again.
Laughter drifted through the open windows.
The smell of grilled meat filled the backyard.
Mariana hummed softly as she set fresh tortillas on the table.
Inés chased their new puppy across the grass.
Leo sat beneath the old lemon tree, carefully building a tiny wooden birdhouse with his father.
"Is this straight?" Leo asked, holding up a crooked piece of wood.
Daniel laughed.
"Not even close."
Leo grinned.
"Good."
"Why good?"
"Because you always say perfect things break easier."
Daniel smiled.
"I guess I do."
The truth was, he hadn't believed those words until the hardest year of his life had taught him.
Their family wasn't perfect.
It never would be.
But it was together.
And that was enough.
Across the yard, Patricia watched them with a quiet smile.
The scars of the past hadn't disappeared.
Some never would.
She still woke from nightmares.
Daniel still checked the locks before bed.
Mariana still cried sometimes when she folded Leo's laundry.
Healing wasn't forgetting.
It was choosing to keep living.
A car pulled into the driveway.
The detective climbed out carrying a small cardboard box.
"I thought this belonged to your family."
Inside were the last belongings recovered from the abandoned farmhouse.
An old backpack.
A worn-out baseball cap.
Several drawings.
Leo carefully unfolded one picture.
It showed four stick figures holding hands.
Above them, written in a child's uneven handwriting, were the words:
No matter how long I'm gone... don't stop looking for me.
Mariana began to cry.
Daniel knelt beside his son.
"We never stopped."
Leo wrapped his arms around both of his parents.
"I know."
As the sun slowly disappeared behind the trees, Daniel looked around the backyard one last time.
His wife was smiling again.
His daughter was laughing.
His sister had found peace.
And his son...
His son was finally where he had always belonged.
Home.
Some stories end with justice.
Others end with forgiveness.
But the best ones end with family.

And after everything they had survived...
The Rivas family finally had theirs back.
