PART 7

"The Promise"

Nobody spoke on the drive back.

Leo sat between Daniel and Mariana, holding both of their hands so tightly that neither of them complained when their fingers went numb.

Every few minutes, he looked over his shoulder.

As if he expected Víctor to come back.

Daniel finally broke the silence.

"Buddy..."

Leo looked up.

"The man said you were hiding something."

Leo lowered his eyes.

"He made me promise."

Mariana gently brushed the hair away from her son's face.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

"The police caught him."

Leo nodded.

"I know."

"But he said bad people always come back."

Daniel swallowed hard.

"Not this time."

Leo was quiet for another moment.

Then he whispered,

"He didn't keep me because he liked me."

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

"Then why?"

Leo took a shaky breath.

"He wanted money."

The detectives exchanged a quick glance.

Leo continued.

"He said Grandpa Hale..." He stopped, confused. "No... not Hale..."

He squeezed his eyes shut.

"I don't remember the name."

The detective leaned forward.

"Take your time."

Leo nodded.

"He kept making phone calls."

"He wanted someone to pay him."

"But nobody ever did."

Daniel frowned.

"He was trying to ransom you?"

Leo nodded.

"But he got scared after my picture was everywhere."

"He said the police were too close."

"So he kept moving me."

The detective looked at Daniel.

"That explains why we never found him."

Leo reached into the pocket of the oversized jacket Patricia had given him months ago.

"I took this."

He pulled out a small silver flash drive.

"I hid it because he never looked in my pocket."

The detective carefully accepted it.

Hours later, forensic analysts opened the files.

Videos.

Photos.

Recorded phone calls.

Everything Víctor had ever documented.

More importantly...

There were recordings proving he had acted alone.

Patricia had never helped him.

She had spent months secretly bringing Leo food and medicine while searching for a chance to rescue him without putting the rest of the family in danger.

Every lie she told...

Every strange decision she made...

Had been an attempt to keep everyone alive.

Daniel found his sister sitting alone outside the police station just before sunrise.

She looked exhausted.

He sat beside her.

For several minutes, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out the old red toy car.

"You kept this."

Patricia nodded.

"I couldn't leave it there."

Daniel looked at her.

"I hated you."

"I know."

"I blamed you."

"I know."

"I was wrong."

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you."

Daniel wrapped his arms around his little sister.

For the first time in nearly a year...

They cried together.

Six months later...

Víctor Salas was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Every charge was supported by the evidence Leo had hidden.

Patricia was publicly cleared of any involvement.

The city honored the officers who refused to give up on the case.

But the greatest victory didn't happen in a courtroom.

It happened on an ordinary Sunday afternoon.

The Rivas family gathered in their backyard again.

The old barbecue smoked gently.

Mariana laughed while making fresh tortillas.

Inés chased butterflies across the grass.

And Leo...

Leo parked his little red toy car beneath the lemon tree.

Then he looked at his father.

"Dad?"

Daniel smiled.

"Yeah, buddy?"

"Can we leave the gate open?"

Daniel glanced at the old gate.

For a second, painful memories rushed back.

Then he looked at his son.

At his daughter.

At Mariana.

At Patricia, smiling quietly from the patio.

He walked over, opened the gate...

...and left it that way.

Not because he had forgotten.

But because fear was no longer going to decide how his family lived.

Leo slipped his hand into Daniel's.

"We're home."

Daniel smiled through tears.

May you like

"Yeah."

"You're finally home."
