Chapter 8 - He Went Back

Ellie had never told anyone that part.

Not police.

Not me.

Not even herself, she said, because Ryan had convinced her it happened in the wrong order.

After the truck hit Daniel Soto, Ryan drove almost a mile.

Then stopped.

Ellie thought he had changed his mind.

She begged him to call an ambulance.

Instead, Ryan turned around.

He drove back toward the scene.

"Why?" I asked.

Ellie started shaking.

"The phone."

Daniel's phone had landed in the road.

Ryan saw it when he first got out.

He went back for it.

"Did he take it?"

Ellie nodded.

"He said it could show who called him."

That made no sense until Detective Holt checked the original crash report.

Daniel's phone had never been found.

Police assumed it was stolen after the collision.

Ellie said Ryan put it in the center console.

The next day it was gone.

"What did he do with it?"

"I don't know."

The navigation unit from the truck did not preserve full turn-by-turn history after nine months.

But it held recent saved destinations and diagnostic logs.

One log showed a severe deceleration on County Road Eight at 10:42 p.m.

Another showed the vehicle moving again.

Then stopping.

Then reversing direction.

It was not enough by itself.

It did not need to be.

Evidence stacked.

Ellie's account.

The repair invoice.

The reflector.

The videos.

The diagnostic data.

Hector's statement.

Ryan's control over the school calls.

The picture became harder to explain away.

Dad sat alone in the garage that night.

I found him staring at the empty space where the toolbox used to be.

"I put that latch on the bathroom door," he said.

"I know."

"He told me Ellie locked herself in when she was angry."

"I know."

"I didn't even ask her."

I sat beside him.

"No."

He looked at me.

"You're not going to tell me it isn't my fault?"

"Ryan chose what he did."

Dad waited.

"And you should have asked Ellie before installing something on her bathroom because Ryan said she needed managing."

Dad nodded.

It hurt.

That was okay.

Then he said, "I want to take it off."

"Ask her."

The next day Dad did.

Ellie stood in the hall staring at the metal latch.

"Can I remove it?" Dad asked.

She thought for nearly a minute.

Then shook her head.

"Not yet."

Dad looked surprised.

"Why?"

"I want Detective Holt to see it again."

Dad nodded.

"Okay."

She looked at the latch.

Then at him.

"After that, I want to take it off."

"You?"

"Yes."

Dad swallowed.

"Okay."

That afternoon police called.

They had arrested Ryan.

Not only for what he had done to Ellie.

The county prosecutor had authorized charges related to Daniel Soto's hit-and-run too.

Mom sat down hard.

Ellie asked one question.

"Can he come home?"

Mom answered immediately.

"No."

Ellie's shoulders dropped.

It was the first time I'd seen relief reach her before fear.
