Chapter 17 - The Day Daniel Came to the House

Daniel met Ellie two years after the crash case ended.

Not because anyone thought a reunion would heal them.

Because Ellie asked.

She was fourteen by then.

Taller.

Still hated being the center of serious conversations.

Daniel came to our parents' house with his wife.

He used a cane only on long days now.

Ellie stood behind the teal bathroom door for ten minutes before coming downstairs.

When she did, Daniel did not hug her.

He did not tell her she was brave.

He said:

"Hi, Ellie."

She said:

"Hi."

They sat at the kitchen table.

The same one where Ryan had recorded some of the rehearsed videos.

Mom had considered replacing it.

Ellie said no.

Furniture did not get to own memories either.

Daniel told her he remembered almost nothing between the impact and waking in the hospital.

"I remember a truck light," he said. "Then somebody telling me not to move."

The person who found him.

Not Ryan.

Ellie stared at her hands.

"I wanted him to call."

"I know."

"I should have—"

Daniel lifted one hand.

"No."

Ellie stopped.

"I was the adult on the road. Ryan was the adult driving. You were a kid in the passenger seat."

She looked at him.

"You're not mad?"

"I was mad for a long time."

Ellie's face tightened.

Daniel continued.

"Not at you."

She exhaled.

They talked for twenty minutes.

Then Daniel asked about ceramics.

Ellie showed him a mug shaped badly like a frog.

He bought it for five dollars.

Ellie protested.

"It's not worth five dollars."

Daniel smiled.

"Correct. It's worth at least six."

She laughed.

After he left, Ellie stood at the freezer.

The plain green ice pack sat beside frozen waffles.

She touched it once.

Then closed the door.

"You okay?" I asked.

"Yeah."

"You sure?"

She gave me a look.

I held up my hands.

"Right. Sorry."

She smiled.

We had all learned a new problem by then.

Sometimes after failing to notice fear, adults overcorrect and inspect every expression.

Ellie deserved privacy too.

Safety was not surveillance.

That lesson took us almost as long as the others.
