Chapter 8 - The Server Room Trap

Celia’s apartment had been emptied.

Her passport remained inside.

Her jewelry remained.

Her phone was found beneath a bridge.

No body.

No evidence of violence.

Only absence.

Victoria believed Richard had moved her somewhere.

Julian believed Celia had moved herself.

I believed evidence would decide.

We found it on the corporate backup server.

Celia had created a timed upload.

If she failed to enter a password every twenty-four hours, files would automatically transfer to three journalists.

The countdown had twelve hours remaining.

Richard knew.

That was why he had ordered the server purge.

The files contained offshore accounts.

Marcus’s hidden hedging fraud.

Richard’s Blackstone deal.

Celia’s own commissions.

She had insured herself by preserving everyone’s guilt.

One document caught my attention.

A payment from Richard to a private security company.

SERVICE: BENNETT GALA MANAGEMENT.

“What does that mean?” Julian asked.

I searched invoices.

The company had hired two temporary security guards for the gala.

One had been positioned beside Victoria.

The other beside the ballroom exit.

Their instructions:

DO NOT INTERVENE IN DOMESTIC CONFRONTATION UNLESS PHYSICAL INJURY EXCEEDS MINOR LEVEL.

I stared.

Richard had instructed security to let Victoria attack me.

The slap.

The dress.

The second raised hand.

None of it had surprised him.

He had created space for it.

Another file contained rehearsal notes.

V.H. receives packet 7:45.

R.H. moves to stage 8:10.

O.B. called forward 8:12.

Confrontation expected before announcement.

Richard had known Victoria would receive the fake messages.

He had ensured I stood near the ballroom microphone.

He wanted public destruction.

Only Julian’s arrival had broken the script.

“How did the anonymous warning reach you?” I asked.

Julian looked at the upload logs.

Then smiled faintly.

“Celia.”

She had warned him.

Not to save me.

To save herself.

If Richard successfully discredited me, the Blackstone deal would proceed without resistance.

But Celia had apparently realized Richard planned to cut her out too.

So she sent Julian enough truth to disrupt the gala.

Every betrayal contained another betrayal.

We traced Celia through the timed upload’s location history.

She had entered a private medical spa under another name.

Not kidnapped.

Hiding.

She surrendered through counsel.

Victoria watched the news report.

“She chose herself.”

“Yes.”

“She always does.”

“That is not automatically a crime.”

Victoria looked at me.

“You really don’t hate her.”

“I don’t know her well enough.”

“She slept with my husband.”

“That affects you.”

“It doesn’t make her the architect of my humiliation.”

Victoria became quiet.

Celia agreed to cooperate.

Her first interview lasted nine hours.

She admitted the affair.

Money laundering.

Fake vendors.

The Blackstone plan.

She also revealed Richard’s escape strategy.

He held bearer certificates representing minority shares purchased through nominees.

If he reached Switzerland and transferred them before the board froze registration, he could still build a blocking position.

The certificates were inside Harrington Global headquarters.

Hidden in the executive archive.

We thought the building had been searched.

Celia laughed when investigators told her.

“Not the archive you know.”

Richard’s father had constructed a private records room behind the original server wall.

A hidden door opened with a mechanical key.

Victoria knew the key.

Her wedding ring.

Richard’s father had designed it as a family-security token.

Victoria removed the ring.

For thirty-one years she had worn it without knowing it opened a wall.

We entered the executive server room with investigators.

The ring fit a narrow steel slot.

A panel released.

Inside were certificates.

Cash.

Old contracts.

And a suitcase.

Richard’s passport copy lay on top.

The bearer shares were gone.

A note remained.

OLIVIA,

YOU OWN A COMPANY.

I OWN THE PEOPLE WHO RUN IT.

SEE YOU AT THE SHAREHOLDER MEETING.

May you like

Richard was not fleeing.

He was preparing to come back through the front door.
