Chapter 5 - The House Bought with Stolen Money

The estate sat behind iron gates forty minutes outside the city.
Richard had named it Ravenwood.
Celia had furnished it.
Italian marble.
Imported chandeliers.
A wine cellar larger than most apartments.
Every dollar had passed through false Harrington vendors.
Victoria insisted on seeing it.
I almost refused.
Then I remembered something important.
The house was evidence.
Not therapy.
So we entered only after investigators secured it.
Victoria walked through the foyer slowly.
She recognized furniture.
“A chair disappeared from our Hamptons house last year.”
She touched the polished wood.
“He told me it had been damaged.”
In the master bedroom, half the closet contained Richard’s clothes.
The other half contained Celia’s.
Victoria found a framed photograph on the dresser.
Richard and Celia stood beneath a vineyard arch in Italy.
Behind them was a handwritten date.
Their anniversary.
It was the same day Richard had sent Victoria flowers for their wedding anniversary.
She sat on the edge of the bed.
For a moment, she looked less like the woman who had ripped my dress.
She looked like someone discovering her marriage had been happening somewhere else.
“I was cruel to you.”
I said nothing.
She continued.
“I believed humiliating you would repair something.”
“It didn’t.”
“No.”
“I thought if the other woman looked small enough, I would feel bigger.”
I looked at her.
“I was never the other woman.”
“I know.”
“Celia is not the reason Richard betrayed you either.”
Victoria looked toward me.
“That sounds generous.”
“It isn’t.”
“He made the choice.”
“Do not turn another woman into the explanation for a man’s decisions.”
Victoria looked down.
For the first time, I saw shame instead of anger.
Investigators found more than luxury.
A hidden office contained duplicate corporate seals.
Pre-signed board resolutions.
Draft press statements.
One had my photograph attached.
BENNETT HEIRESS EXPOSED IN CEO AFFAIR SCANDAL.
Another headline had already been prepared.
BOARD QUESTIONS SECRET OWNER’S MENTAL STABILITY.
I laughed.
Julian looked at me.
“What?”
“Apparently every powerful woman eventually becomes unstable when she finds the accounting.”
He almost smiled.
Another draft announced that Blackstone Meridian Capital would purchase distressed Harrington shares after the scandal.
Richard planned to lower confidence.
Force lenders to panic.
Convince minority shareholders to sell.
Then purchase control through a hidden vehicle.
He would become the real owner after pretending to lose everything.
A brilliant plan.
Except he had not expected Julian to walk into the ballroom.
I looked toward him.
“How did you know?”
“Know what?”
“To come tonight.”
He hesitated.
“Olivia.”
“Julian.”
“I received an anonymous message.”
My expression changed.
“What message?”
He showed me.
COME TO THE GALA.
VICTORIA HAS BEEN GIVEN FAKE EVIDENCE.
OLIVIA WILL BE ATTACKED PUBLICLY.
BRING OWNERSHIP DOCUMENTS.
No sender.
No traceable number.
Someone inside Richard’s plan had warned Julian.
“Celia?” I asked.
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“She would not save you.”
“Maybe she wanted Richard exposed.”
“No.”
Victoria looked toward the hidden office.
“Celia wanted me gone.”
Julian found a second phone inside a drawer.
Its message history had been mostly deleted.
One conversation remained.
UNKNOWN: The gala goes forward.
RICHARD: Victoria will handle Olivia.
UNKNOWN: And after?
RICHARD: Olivia loses credibility.
Victoria loses the marriage.
Board panics.
We close the purchase.
UNKNOWN: Good.
RICHARD: You get what I promised.
UNKNOWN: I already have it.
Julian frowned.
“This isn’t Celia.”
“How do you know?” I asked.
“The account uses board-level encryption.”
Only four people possessed that access.
Richard.
Thomas Keller.
Chief Financial Officer Marcus Hale.
And me.
I had not sent the messages.
Richard was the recipient.
Thomas had voted against him.
That left Marcus Hale.
