Chapter 9 - The Name She Wanted

Evelyn did not need my inheritance.

She needed my credibility.

That was almost more insulting.

The three scheduled private sales totaled $11.2 million.

The catalogs were already drafted.

Seller:

Evelyn Vance, representing selections from the Vance private collection.

Two paintings were under investigation.

The third had questionable ownership history.

Marriage would not magically make them legal.

It would make buyers less suspicious.

A Vance selling from a Vance collection at a discreet private sale sounded like family housekeeping, not laundering.

Genevieve read the draft catalogs at Sarah's kitchen table.

"She was going to use the wedding announcement as provenance."

"Explain."

"Not legal provenance. Social provenance."

She pointed to the seller biography.

Newly married to hotelier and collector Thomas Vance, Evelyn Vance has spent years advising private and corporate collections.

A photograph of us was already selected.

Me in black tie.

Evelyn at my side.

Our relationship converted into a trust signal.

I wanted to be angry only at her.

Then I remembered how willingly I had lent that trust.

When museum registrars requested more documentation on purchases, I sometimes told them Evelyn had handled it.

When Linda asked whether a small gallery had enough insurance, I said, "If Evelyn is comfortable, I'm comfortable."

I had made my private confidence into corporate process.

That was my mistake.

Not theft.

Not forgery.

Still a failure.

At the criminal investigation meeting, an FBI agent named Daniel Ruiz asked Genevieve why she created the USB.

"Because I knew Dad might not believe me if I only said Evelyn hit me."

The sentence hurt.

Ruiz looked at me.

I said, "She was right."

Genevieve looked surprised.

I continued.

"I might have believed the assault. I would have treated the art as her trying to destroy the wedding."

"Dad-"

"Don't rescue me from that."

She went quiet.

The fourth USB folder still had not been opened.

4_IF_I_AM_WRONG.

Genevieve finally clicked it herself.

It contained evidence that could have cleared Evelyn.

Invoices from legitimate restorers.

Authentic provenance for eighteen of the twenty-seven works.

Emails where Evelyn rejected questionable acquisitions.

Genevieve had saved the exculpatory material too.

"Why?" I asked.

She looked offended.

"Because I could be wrong."

Ruiz smiled faintly.

That folder changed how investigators treated her research.

She was not building a prosecution.

She was testing a theory.

Then one of the legitimate emails revealed something none of us expected.

Two months before the wedding, Evelyn had written to Sebastian:

I'M DONE MOVING THE OLD STOCK. AFTER THE VANCE SALES, WE CLOSE IT AND GO CLEAN.

Genevieve stared.

"She was trying to stop."

Priya shook her head.

"After one last eleven-million-dollar sale."

Both could be true.

Then Ruiz's phone rang.

Canadian authorities had opened Sebastian's seized laptop.

There was a folder labeled THOMAS.

Inside were photographs of me taken before I ever met Evelyn.

Some were six years old.
