Chapter 2 - The First Video

I did not cancel the wedding immediately.
That sounds terrible.
It was also deliberate.
I told the coordinator there was a family medical emergency and asked security to keep guests in the ballroom for fifteen minutes while I used the hotel's executive office.
Evelyn followed.
"Thomas, this is insane."
"Stay outside."
"You are really choosing Genevieve's story over me on our wedding day?"
I looked at her.
"I'm choosing to look at evidence before I choose anyone."
Her face hardened.
My son-in-law had died when Toby was eight months old, and Genevieve had raised him alone since then. We had repaired enough of our relationship that she sometimes let me babysit. Not enough that she trusted my judgment about Evelyn.
Maybe she had been right.
Sarah arrived with Toby and a hotel security supervisor. Genevieve was staying at an urgent-care observation unit under a doctor's order.
The supervisor disconnected the office laptop from the hotel network before inserting the USB.
There were four folders.

I opened the first.
The image came from Genevieve's apartment entry camera.
Date: two nights earlier.
Genevieve opened the door.
Evelyn stood outside wearing a tan coat.
GENEVIEVE: You should leave.
EVELYN: Give me the inventory copy.
GENEVIEVE: No.
EVELYN: You don't understand what you're accusing people of.
GENEVIEVE: I understand a false provenance when I see one.
Evelyn pushed inside.
My stomach dropped.
The camera did not show the whole living room, but the audio was clear.
GENEVIEVE: Get out.
EVELYN: Your father is marrying me Saturday. You can either accept reality or keep trying to make him hate you.
GENEVIEVE: This isn't about Dad.
EVELYN: Everything is about him now.
A crash.
Toby crying somewhere off-camera.
Then Genevieve appeared again, stumbling backward.
Evelyn struck her across the face.
Not a defensive shove.
A full swing.
Genevieve grabbed the table.
Evelyn reached for something in her hand.
GENEVIEVE: Don't touch my phone.
EVELYN: Give it to me.
Another struggle.
Genevieve fell.
The side of her head struck a low marble console.
The video shook because Toby was screaming.
Evelyn stood over my daughter.
Then she said the sentence that ended any remaining question about whether the blow had been accidental.
"You should have stayed out of my name."
She took Genevieve's phone.
Then noticed the door camera.
The video ended twelve seconds later.
Sarah covered her mouth.
I could not move.
Toby sat in the corner with the security supervisor, coloring on hotel stationery. I was grateful he could not see the screen.
Sarah whispered, "She left him alone with Genevieve unconscious."
I looked at the timestamp.
Evelyn left at 8:14 p.m.
Sarah found Genevieve at 8:46 after Toby used the emergency contact button on his little GPS watch.
Thirty-two minutes.
The woman in the bridal suite had spent the next day asking me whether I wanted white roses or cream.
A knock sounded.
"Thomas," Evelyn called through the door. "Open this now."
I clicked the folder labeled 2_NAME.
One scanned driver's license appeared.
The face belonged to my fiancee.
The name did not.
ELISE MERCER.
