Chapter 1 - Ten Minutes Before I Said I Do

"Grandpa, don't marry her. She hit my mommy when you weren't there."
My name is Thomas Vance, and I froze in the hotel hallway ten minutes before I was supposed to walk into a ballroom filled with one hundred twenty guests.
My grandson Toby had both hands wrapped around mine. He was three years old, wearing a gray suit that was too big in the shoulders and a bow tie that had already twisted sideways. One shoelace dragged behind him.
He was not smiling.
He pointed toward the bridal suite.
Evelyn Kensington stood at the far end of the hall in ivory lace, laughing while a photographer adjusted her veil. At thirty-eight, she was thirty years younger than I was and young enough that my daughter had called the relationship a midlife disaster even after I reminded her I was well past midlife.
For two years Evelyn had been patient with every insult.
She brought coffee to my office. She remembered my medications. She sat beside me through a pneumonia scare. She listened when I talked too long about hotels, old buildings, and the collection of American paintings my company had spent thirty years assembling.
And yes, she had first been my mistress.
I had been married to Marianne when the affair began.
That fact had cost me my marriage and nearly cost me my daughter.
I had told myself that marrying Evelyn would at least prove the destruction had led somewhere real.
Then Toby whispered, "She hit Mommy."
I dropped to my knees.
"Where is Mommy now?"
"Aunt Sarah."
My younger sister Sarah lived across town.
Genevieve had texted that morning saying she had a migraine and might miss the ceremony.
Evelyn had touched my arm and said, "Your daughter is still punishing you. Don't let her ruin today."
I had believed that too quickly.
"Did Mommy tell you anything else?"
Toby looked toward Evelyn, then shoved one hand into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a scratched black USB drive.
"She said if she fell asleep a long time, give you this."
The hallway seemed to narrow.
I took the drive.
"Did Mommy fall asleep?"
Toby nodded.
"Aunt Sarah said doctor medicine made her sleepy."
I stood so fast my knee hurt.
Evelyn saw my face and stopped smiling.
She began walking toward us.
"Thomas?"
I slipped the USB into my breast pocket.
"Where is Genevieve?"
Evelyn's expression changed only slightly.
"I told you. She has a migraine."
"Toby says you hit her."
The bridesmaids went silent.
Evelyn looked down at Toby.
Something passed through her face.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
"He's three. Genevieve fills his head with things."
Toby moved behind my leg.
That was enough.
I called Sarah.
She answered on the first ring.
"Thomas, get out of that hallway. Don't let Evelyn see the drive."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What happened?"
"Genevieve has a concussion and six stitches near her hairline. She woke up an hour ago. She made me promise Toby would get that USB to you before the ceremony."
I looked at Evelyn.
The woman I was about to marry had stopped walking toward me.
"Why?"
Sarah's voice dropped.
"Because Genevieve says Evelyn is not Evelyn Kensington."
I said nothing.
Sarah continued.
"And whatever is on that drive is the reason she attacked your daughter."
