Chapter 8 - The Doorbell

“You already chose,” I said.

“That’s not fair.”

“Neither was leaving Mateo’s car seat in the SUV.”

“I’m trying to come see him.”

“Then arrange a visit through Elena.”

“You’re using our son against me.”

“No. I’m asking for a visit that won’t turn into another argument.”

He hung up.

The next morning, a gift basket arrived at my father’s gate.

Blue ribbon.

Stuffed bear.

A card that said, Families forgive.

There was no apology.

By lunchtime, the story had reached Marco’s relatives.

An aunt sent a message about respect.

A cousin told me men made mistakes when new babies disrupted a marriage.

Someone else wrote that wealthy women always thought they could buy obedience.

I muted them all.

Then Teresa posted online.

She did not use my name.

She did not need to.

A grandmother denied her first grandson. A hardworking son humiliated by a wife who had hidden her fortune. A private disagreement blown apart by a controlling father.

Underneath was a photograph of Teresa holding Mateo in the hospital.

I remembered taking that picture.

I had thanked her for coming.

“Do you want us to answer?” Papa asked.

“No.”

He nodded.

It cost him something.

I could see it.

That evening, the gate intercom rang.

Marco was outside with his mother.

He held flowers.

Teresa held up her phone.

The security monitor showed her speaking toward the camera.

“We only want to see the baby.”

Elena had already offered Marco a supervised visit for the following afternoon.

He had not answered.

I called him instead of going outside.

“You have a time tomorrow.”

“I’m here now.”

“You weren’t invited.”

“So this is who you are?”

I looked at Mateo sleeping against my shoulder.

“No,” I said. “This is what I’m learning.”

Teresa raised her voice beyond the phone.

“Julia! Bring my grandson out!”

The baby startled.

His little body jerked against mine.

Something settled inside me.

Not anger.

A decision.

I took him upstairs.

Papa spoke through the intercom and told them to leave. When they refused, security called for assistance.

Marco finally pulled his mother toward the SUV.

Before getting in, he looked directly at the gate camera.

“I’ll come back with papers.”

The next morning, Elena called before breakfast.

Her voice was calm.

May you like

Too calm.

“Marco has filed a complaint,” she said. “He claims your father is preventing you from leaving the house.”
