Chapter 14 - THE LAST DEAL

The case did not end that afternoon.

It widened.

The recovered devices helped investigators compare messages, banking records, and dates. The account supposedly belonging to me had been accessed through devices connected to Adrian’s office.

Verification files showed documents submitted without my participation.

Vanessa’s records filled gaps.

Daniel’s copies established what existed before Adrian tried to remove it.

Rosa’s photograph and recording mattered.

So did Catherine’s eventual statement.

No single person saved me.

They told the truth in pieces until Adrian ran out of places to put the lie.

Months passed.

There were hearings, amended filings, interviews, and days when nothing seemed to happen.

I learned to measure those days differently.

A whole night of sleep.

A meal without checking someone else’s mood.

An afternoon when I forgot where my phone was and didn’t panic.

Then Leah called.

“His attorneys want to discuss a resolution in the divorce.”

“What does he want?”

“A broad confidentiality provision. Money. Mutual releases.”

“And the criminal case?”

“Separate. He can’t buy control over your cooperation.”

I went to her office anyway.

Adrian appeared remotely.

He looked thinner.

I refused to turn that into proof of remorse.

For almost an hour, the lawyers discussed property, company interests, disputed funds.

Then Adrian asked to address me.

Leah looked at me.

I nodded.

“Evelyn,” he said, “we both made mistakes.”

There it was.

Months of consequences, and he still needed company in the blame.

“What was yours?” I asked.

He glanced offscreen.

“I let things get out of control.”

“No. Name it.”

His face hardened.

“This is why we can’t move forward.”

“I have moved forward.”

He leaned toward the camera.

“You think any of these people would care if your father wasn’t rich?”

The question hurt because I had asked it myself.

Because I knew how much support I had received that others struggled to find.

I let the hurt settle.

Then I answered.

“That’s a reason to help more people. It isn’t a reason to protect you.”

Leah closed the proposed confidentiality agreement.

“We’re finished with this version.”

Adrian’s voice sharpened.

“Evelyn. Don’t walk away from me.”

I stood.

My knees trembled.

I stood anyway.

At the door, my phone rang.

Ruiz.

I stepped into the hallway.

Her voice was calm.

“The prosecutors have filed the additional financial charges.”

I closed my eyes.

Behind me, through the conference room speaker, Adrian was still saying my name.

For once, I didn’t have to answer.
