M2. THE MAID’S DAUGHTER / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - WHAT HIS MOTHER LEFT HIM

The recording began with static.

Then Elena Moretti spoke.

Alessandro hadn’t heard her voice in twenty-six years.

He put a hand over his mouth.

“If you’re listening to this, Bruno, take Alessandro somewhere safe.”

A chair scraped.

Her breathing was uneven.

“Vittorio found the bank papers. He knows I spoke to an attorney.”

Alessandro stared at the recorder.

Rosa sat beside him.

Neither moved.

“He said there would be an accident before he let me take our son.”

Brooks stopped the tape.

“There’s more. We need to preserve the original and have the full recording examined. I can’t tell you yet what charges it will support.”

Alessandro nodded.

He understood the difference now.

Knowing something in your bones wasn’t the same as proving it in court.

But his mother had spoken.

For the first time, nobody was telling him what she meant.

The months that followed were ugly.

Searches. Hearings. Headlines.

Vincent Romano was charged in the conspiracy tied to the attempted abduction and the estate fire.

Isabella cooperated through her attorney and pleaded guilty to her role.

She wrote Rosa a letter.

Rosa read it once, then put it away.

Forgiveness wasn’t a deadline.

Vittorio faced charges from the recent crimes while investigators reopened Elena’s death.

He asked to see Alessandro.

Alessandro declined.

Then came his own reckoning.

The government had not promised to overlook the money he had moved or the intimidation he had funded.

His cooperation mattered.

So did what he had done.

He pleaded guilty to charges arising from his part in the enterprise, agreed to forfeit criminal proceeds, and received a prison sentence.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted about betrayal.

Rosa heard one ask whether she regretted exposing the father of her child.

She turned.

“I regret that so many people had to be afraid before anyone told the truth.”

That night, Alessandro sat on Lily’s bedroom floor.

She was four now.

“Is it because you did something bad?”

“Yes.”

“Are you bad?”

He swallowed.

“I did things that hurt people. I’m trying to become someone who doesn’t.”

She pushed the wooden horse into his hand.

“Take him.”

“I think you should keep him until I come home.”

“How many sleeps?”

“Too many to count on your fingers.”

Her face crumpled.

Rosa gathered her close.

Alessandro stayed beside them until she slept.

Then Rosa handed him an envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Lily holding the gold button.

On the back, Rosa had written:

COME HOME DIFFERENT.
