Chapter 11

Life after the trial was... different.
Good different.
We didn't have to look over our shoulders anymore.
We didn't have to worry about Celeste.
She was gone.
And she was never coming back.
But healing takes time.
Elena still had nightmares.
Not as often.
But they still came.
Ilaria still got scared sometimes.
When she heard a loud noise.
When someone raised their voice.
When she saw a pitcher of ice water.
But we worked through it.
Together.
Therapy helped.
Time helped.
Love helped the most.
We made new memories.
Good memories.
To replace the bad ones.
We took Ilaria to the beach.
She had never seen the ocean before.
Her face when she felt the water on her feet.
Pure joy.
We took her to Disneyland.
She met all the princesses.
She told them she was a princess too.
And she was.
Our little princess.
Elena started working again.
Part-time at first.
Then full-time.
She was an artist.
Painting had always been her passion.
She had painted in the cabin.
With whatever she could find.
Berry juice on old paper.
Mud on wood.
Now she had a proper studio.
And she painted beautiful things.
Landscapes.
Portraits of Ilaria.
Paintings about hope and survival.
Her work got noticed.
She had a gallery showing.
It was a success.
People loved her art.
They loved her story.
She used her platform to help other survivors.
She volunteered at a shelter for victims of domestic violence.
She spoke at support groups.
She became a voice for those who couldn't speak for themselves.
I was so proud of her.
So incredibly proud.
I went back to work too.
But I made sure to be home for dinner every night.
No more late meetings.
No more business trips.
Family came first.
Always.
We bought a new house.
A fresh start.
Somewhere Celeste had never been.
Somewhere we could make new memories.
It had a big backyard.
Ilaria got a swing set.
And a dog.
A golden retriever puppy.
She named him Sunny.
Because, she said, "he makes every day sunny."
May you like
She was right.
Our life was sunny again.
