Chapter 10

Sentencing day arrived.
We had to go back to court one more time.
Celeste stood before the judge.
Her lawyer asked for leniency.
He talked about her difficult childhood.
Her mental health issues.
Her "capacity for rehabilitation."
The judge listened.
Then it was the prosecution's turn.
The DA asked for the maximum sentence.
"Celeste Bennett didn't just kidnap a woman," he said. "She destroyed a family. She tortured a child. She tried to steal a life. And she showed no remorse. None. She deserves to spend every remaining day of her life behind bars."
Then victims were given the opportunity to speak.
I went first.
I stood at the podium.
I looked at Celeste.
She looked back.
No remorse.
No regret.
"You tried to take everything from me," I said. "My wife. My daughter. My family. You pretended to be our friend. Our savior. All while you were the monster who had destroyed us."
I paused.
I gathered my thoughts.
"But you failed," I continued. "You failed because love is stronger than obsession. You failed because my wife is stronger than you ever imagined. You failed because my daughter is braver than you could ever understand. And you failed because you underestimated what a father will do to protect his family."
I stepped down.
Elena went next.
She walked to the podium.
She stood tall.
"I spent eight months in a cabin," she said. "Chained to a floor. Wondering if I would ever see my family again. Wondering if my daughter would remember me. Wondering if I would die alone."
Her voice didn't waver.
"You thought you had won," she said to Celeste. "You thought you could take my place. But you were wrong. I am Elena Hale. I am a wife. I am a mother. And I am a survivor. You can't take that from me. No one can."
She paused.
"I don't hate you," she said. "Hate is too heavy. It would give you power over me that you don't deserve. I pity you. Because you will never know what it's like to be loved the way I am loved. You will never know what it's like to hold your child. You will never know real happiness. And that is your punishment."
She stepped down.
The judge spoke.
"Celeste Bennett," he said. "What you did was unspeakable. You betrayed a friend. You destroyed a family. You tortured an innocent child. And you showed absolutely no remorse. The court has no choice but to send a message. This behavior will not be tolerated."
He looked down at his papers.
"On all counts," he said, "you are hereby sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole."
The gavel came down.
It was done.
Celeste was led away.
She didn't look back.
We walked out of the courtroom.
