Chapter 8 - Carmen’s House

Carmen had chosen the house herself.

A gated property with four bedrooms, a pool, marble floors, and a covered terrace.

She had already told friends she was moving.

She had even chosen furniture.

There was only one problem.

She could not afford it.

So Daniel created a company.

Then he began moving household money into it.

My household money.

My salary.

My daughter’s care budget.

The 35,000 pesos I sent Carmen every month had not been used only for Camila.

A large portion had gone into the future down payment.

The rest funded restaurants, clothing, trips, and Valeria’s lifestyle.

When Lucía showed me the numbers, I asked one question.

“How much was actually spent on Camila?”

She turned another page.

The figure was painfully small.

Diapers before potty training.

Basic groceries.

A few medicines.

Nothing close to what I sent.

I remembered Camila saying Grandma needed the money more than she did.

Now I understood.

During his next supervised visit, Daniel brought Camila a stuffed rabbit.

She accepted it politely.

Then she asked him something that made the supervisor look away.

“Daddy, are you going to leave me alone again?”

Daniel froze.

“No, princess.”

“Grandma said you said it was okay.”

His face collapsed.

I watched through the observation window.

For the first time, I saw him understand that Camila remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

After the visit, he asked to speak to me.

“I want to fix this.”

“You can’t fix what already happened.”

“I can testify about the money.”

“Why now?”

“Because my mother lied to me too.”

That answer almost made me angry.

Almost.

“You’re still trying to make yourself another victim.”

“I know.”

He looked down.

Then, surprisingly, he said something honest.

“I let her do it because it was easier than telling her no.”

There it was.

The entire marriage in one sentence.

Daniel had not been controlled by Carmen.

He had cooperated with her because I absorbed the cost.

Financially.

Emotionally.

And finally, Camila had absorbed it physically.

He slid a flash drive across the table.

“What is this?”

“Messages.”

“From your mother?”

“And Valeria.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

That answer made me pause.

“Then why give it to me?”

He looked through the glass at Camila holding the stuffed rabbit.

“Because Mom has already decided this is all your fault.”

I took the drive.

Later, Lucía opened it on an isolated computer.

Most of the messages confirmed what we already knew.

Then we found a folder labeled MARIANA.

Inside were scanned copies of my ID.

Tax statements.

Salary certificates.

My apartment deed.

And a document I had never seen.

A draft agreement transferring partial ownership of my apartment to Daniel’s company.

At the bottom was a blank signature line.

Above it was my name.

They had not just wanted my money.

They had been preparing to take my home.
