Chapter 10 - The Video That Changed Everything

The video changed the custody case.

It also changed Daniel.

Before it surfaced, he had minimized.

Deflected.

Blamed Carmen.

Blamed stress.

Blamed me for traveling.

After the video, he stopped pretending he had merely failed to notice.

He had participated.

His attorney withdrew the request for primary custody.

But Carmen became more aggressive.

She demanded grandparents’ visitation.

She claimed Camila and I were emotionally dependent on each other in an unhealthy way.

She claimed I worked too much to parent.

She claimed she had been Camila’s “true maternal figure.”

Lucía read the filing with a cold expression.

“She wants legal access.”

“After what she did?”

“She wants leverage.”

I understood immediately.

If Carmen could preserve a court-ordered relationship with Camila, she could continue presenting herself as indispensable.

The money might return later.

The control might return with it.

We opposed the request.

Then something unexpected happened.

Ernesto called me.

My father-in-law had barely spoken during the entire conflict.

At the seafood dinner, he had been there.

Eating.

Watching.

Doing nothing.

I almost ignored the call.

Then I answered.

His voice sounded old.

“I have something you need to see.”

“What?”

“Not on the phone.”

I agreed to meet him at Lucía’s office.

He arrived carrying a paper grocery bag.

Inside were notebooks.

Receipts.

Printed bank transfers.

And one small external hard drive.

“I kept records.”

“Why?”

Ernesto stared at his hands.

“Because Carmen told me the house would be ours.”

He admitted he knew Daniel was saving money for it.

He claimed he did not know the money came from unauthorized transfers.

I was not sure I believed him.

Then he pushed one notebook toward me.

Carmen’s handwriting filled the pages.

Budgets.

House prices.

Furniture lists.

Amounts beside my name.

One line had been underlined twice.

Mariana cannot leave Daniel while Camila is attached to us.

My skin went cold.

Another entry read:

More travel = more dependence.

Another:

If she threatens divorce, Daniel asks for custody.

Lucía stopped reading.

“This was planned.”

Not the neglect itself.

Not necessarily.

But the dependence.

The financial extraction.

The use of Camila as leverage.

It was written plainly enough that even Ernesto looked ashamed.

Then he gave us the hard drive.

“What’s on this?”

“Carmen backs up her phone to the family computer.”

He swallowed.

“She doesn’t know I copied it.”

Lucía did not touch the drive.

“We’ll have it forensically preserved.”

Ernesto nodded.

Before leaving, he looked at me.

“I should have opened that balcony door.”

I did not comfort him.

“Yes.”

My answer made him flinch.

“You should have.”

That night, the forensic technician called Lucía.

The backup contained thousands of messages.

One conversation stood out.

It had taken place two months earlier.

Carmen had asked Daniel a question.

If Mariana ever leaves, are you sure the court will give Camila to us?

May you like

Daniel had replied:

If we make her look absent enough, yes.
