Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

Daniel’s testimony filled the final gaps.
He admitted creating the company.
He admitted transferring household funds.
He admitted using my financial documents without permission.
He admitted discussing the property scheme with Carmen.
He denied personally forging my signature.
According to him, Carmen had given the signed page back to him already completed.
Carmen denied everything.
Then Valeria hired her own attorney.
That told us she was scared.
Her attorney contacted Lucía with an offer.
Valeria would cooperate.
In exchange, she wanted protection from claims related to smaller transfers and purchases.
I did not care about her handbags.
I cared about the truth.
Valeria produced messages Carmen had deleted.
One of them described the balcony punishment.
Leave her five more minutes. Mariana babies her too much.
Another from Daniel:
Fine, but bring her in before Mariana calls.
There it was.
Daniel knew.
Again.
Valeria also provided the original seafood video.
Not the short clip uploaded online.
Twenty-seven minutes.
The camera wandered around the table while everyone talked.
Camila could be heard crying behind the balcony door.
At one point, Ernesto asked:
“Shouldn’t someone bring her inside?”
Carmen replied:
“She has to learn.”
Daniel said nothing.
Later, Camila knocked on the glass.
Daniel looked toward her.
He saw her.
Then he turned back to the table.
That image ended the last part of me that wondered whether he simply had not understood.
He understood enough to open a door.
He did not.
The video became the centerpiece of our final custody hearing.
Lucía did not need dramatic speeches.
She played seventy-four seconds.
That was enough.
When the screen went dark, nobody in the courtroom moved.
Daniel cried silently.
Carmen stared straight ahead.
I watched the judge write something.
Then Daniel’s attorney whispered to him.
Daniel stood.
“I want to say something.”
The judge warned him to speak through counsel.
His attorney nodded.
Daniel swallowed.
“My wife was not absent.”
My breath caught.
“I told people she was.”
He looked toward me.
“But every trip she took paid for that home.”
His voice shook.
“She trusted me with our daughter.”
Then he said the one sentence I never expected to hear from him.
“And I failed both of them.”
Carmen turned toward him in disbelief.
“Daniel.”
He did not look at her.
For the first time in our marriage, he had chosen a side without checking his mother’s face first.
It was simply too late for that choice to save us.
