Chapter 9 - The Road North

Snow began falling as Emma’s convoy crossed into northern Wisconsin.

The unfinished Bennett resort sat four hours away.

Ryan had a three-hour lead.

Owen studied maps on a tablet.

“There are two access roads.”

“Federal teams are covering both.”

“He will not use the roads.”

“You think he’ll leave by water?”

“Victor built a maintenance tunnel from the property to the old quarry.”

“Ryan knew?”

“He reviewed every construction file.”

Emma looked out at the dark highway.

“Of course he did.”

Owen’s phone rang.

Lily appeared on the screen.

Her face was pale.

“Mom took the copy.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“Where?”

“We’re tracing her car.”

“Did she contact Ryan?”

“Yes.”

“What did he promise?”

“Noah.”

Emma laughed once.

It sounded empty.

“He already had Noah.”

“She believed he would give him to her.”

“To Mom?”

“She said she could protect him until this ended.”

Emma thought of Diane waiting twenty-three minutes beside Victor’s wrecked car.

Her mother had always confused fear with protection.

“Find her.”

“We are.”

Lily lowered her voice.

“Emma, the judge froze payroll.”

“How long do we have?”

“Until noon tomorrow.”

“If we cannot prove the transfers were fraudulent, the bank can seize company reserves.”

Thousands of employees might miss rent, mortgages, and medical payments.

Ryan had built the trap carefully.

Even losing the company would hurt innocent people.

Emma rubbed her eyes.

“Call the union council.”

“Tell them everything.”

“They may remove us completely.”

“Good.”

Lily stared.

“What?”

“The company does not need another Bennett protecting the family name.”

“It needs people protecting the workers.”

“Give the employees every record.”

“Emma, that means exposing Dad’s mistakes too.”

“Do it.”

Victor had failed to act quickly enough when Ryan entered the company.

Diane had hidden theft.

Lily had accepted money.

Emma had trusted signatures instead of checking them.

The entire Bennett family had participated through action, fear, or silence.

The workers deserved the truth.

Lily nodded.

“I’ll release everything.”

Before ending the call, she whispered, “I’m going to bring Mom back.”

Emma looked at her sister.

“Bring the ledger.”

Lily understood.

Trust was not repaired yet.

Maybe it never would be.

The convoy turned onto a forest road.

A wrecked SUV blocked the lane.

Federal agents exited first.

The vehicle belonged to Diane.

Blood marked the driver’s door.

The copied ledger was gone.

Diane was missing.

Emma found her mother’s scarf near the trees.

Footprints led toward an old hunting cabin.

They followed.

Inside, Diane lay on the floor.

Her hands were tied.

A bruise darkened her forehead.

Emma knelt beside her.

“Mom.”

Diane opened her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

“Where is the ledger?”

“A man took it.”

“Ryan?”

“No.”

“Pierce.”

Detective Pierce had escaped federal custody during transfer.

Celeste still had allies inside law enforcement.

Diane began crying.

“I thought Ryan would give me Noah.”

“How many times does he have to lie before you stop helping him?”

“I heard Noah crying on the phone.”

“He said you were driving toward a trap.”

“He said the ledger was the only way to save him.”

Emma cut the ropes.

“You chose him again.”

“I chose Noah.”

“No.”

“You chose the person frightening you.”

Diane looked toward the floor.

Emma stood.

Owen helped Diane outside.

A medical team examined her.

Emma’s phone rang from an unknown number.

Ryan’s voice came through.

“You found her.”

“Where is Noah?”

“With me.”

“Let me speak to him.”

“Not yet.”

“You already have both ledgers.”

“I have books.”

“I need activation authority.”

“The employee transfer cannot be reversed.”

“It can if you are dead.”

Owen looked toward Emma.

Ryan continued.

“Come to the resort alone.”

“If I see federal vehicles, I leave with Noah.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere you will never find.”

Emma forced her voice to remain steady.

“What do you want?”

“A recorded confession.”

“To what?”

“Victor’s murder.”

Emma almost laughed.

“You want me to confess to killing my father.”

“You admit you altered the brakes.”

“You admit you stole from Bennett Homes.”

“You admit your breakdown made you dangerous to Noah.”

“Then I release him to Diane.”

Diane covered her mouth.

Ryan wanted Emma imprisoned and the company discredited.

With Emma removed, Celeste could keep challenging Noah’s trust.

“Let me speak to him.”

A child’s voice entered the call.

“Mommy?”

Emma closed her eyes.

“I’m here.”

“Daddy says you did a bad thing.”

“I didn’t.”

“I knew.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“He gave me cereal.”

Ryan took the phone back.

“Midnight.”

The call ended.

Federal agents advised Emma not to go.

Owen advised delay.

Diane begged her to let trained teams handle it.

Emma looked toward the resort road.

“I am going.”

Owen stepped beside her.

“Then we build the confession he wants.”

“What?”

“You record a statement.”

“We embed coded language that gives agents legal confirmation you are under duress.”

“Ryan may detect it.”

“He studied your life.”

“He did not study Victor’s.”

Emma remembered her father’s promise.

Never build what you would be ashamed to live inside.

She could use those words.

At eleven forty-five, Emma approached the resort alone.

A camera followed her from the gate.

Ryan’s voice came through outdoor speakers.

“Leave the phone.”

She placed it on the ground.

“Remove your coat.”

She did.

“Turn around.”

She obeyed.

No weapons.

No wire visible.

The transmitter Owen had placed inside Victor’s wedding ring remained on Emma’s hand.

Ryan opened the lodge door.

He held Noah beside him.

The child ran forward.

Ryan caught the back of his coat.

“No.”

Emma stopped.

Noah reached toward her.

“Mommy.”

Ryan smiled.

“Confess first.”

Celeste stepped from the shadows.

She held a camera.

Pierce stood beside her with a gun.

The family Emma thought she had married into had never existed.

Ryan looked at the wedding ring on Emma’s hand.

“Take it off.”

Emma’s pulse quickened.

“Why?”

“Because you are not my wife anymore.”

He held out his hand.

Emma removed the ring.

For one second, she believed the operation had failed.

Then Noah kicked Ryan’s leg.

The ring slipped from Emma’s fingers.

It rolled beneath the lodge porch.

The transmitter remained active.

Ryan grabbed Noah harder.

“Do that again, and your mother leaves alone.”

Emma’s fear became rage.

She forced it down.

Celeste started recording.

Ryan looked at her.

“Tell the truth.”

Emma stared into the camera.

“My name is Emma Bennett Carter.”

Ryan corrected her.

“Bennett.”

Emma understood.

He wanted the marriage erased.

“My name is Emma Bennett.”

“I altered my father’s car.”

“I stole from Bennett Homes.”

“I created false accusations against Ryan Ward and Celeste Ward.”

Ryan smiled.

Emma continued.

“I built a life I was ashamed to live inside.”

His smile disappeared slightly.

Victor’s coded phrase.

Federal agents now had confirmation of duress.

Emma looked toward Noah.

“And I am speaking because my son is being threatened.”

Celeste stopped the camera.

“That part will be edited.”

Ryan shoved Noah toward Pierce.

“Take him to the plane.”

Emma moved forward.

“You promised.”

Ryan laughed.

“You still believe promises.”

Pierce dragged Noah toward the rear door.

Emma ran.

Celeste struck her with the camera.

Emma fell.

Ryan crouched beside her.

“You should have stayed at Lily’s apartment and screamed.”

“That was all we needed.”

Emma looked up at him.

“You never understood me.”

“I understood you perfectly.”

“No.”

“You studied what I liked.”

“What I feared.”

“What I owned.”

“You never learned what I would do after you touched my child.”

A siren sounded outside.

Ryan’s face changed.

The resort lights went out.

Owen’s voice came through the outdoor speakers.

“She keeps moving.”

Federal agents stormed the property.

Pierce pulled Noah toward the quarry tunnel.

Emma pushed herself up and followed.

The tunnel lights flashed red.

Noah screamed.

May you like

A gunshot echoed underground.

Then the child’s voice stopped.
