Chapter 6 - Twenty-Three Minutes

Diane lowered her hands.
Her face looked older than it had minutes earlier.
“I followed him.”
Emma stared.
“Why?”
“Victor was going to meet Owen.”
“He had the red ledger.”
“Ryan told me your father planned to accuse me of theft.”
Ryan laughed.
“I told you the truth.”
“You used her name,” Emma said.
“I used an available company.”
Diane continued.
“I wanted Victor to come home.”
“I called him from the car.”
“He wouldn’t answer.”
“It was raining.”
“He turned onto Ridge Road.”
“Then his brake lights flashed.”
Emma gripped the table.
“What happened?”
“His car swerved.”
“It struck the barrier.”
“I stopped.”
“Why didn’t you call immediately?”
Diane began sobbing.
“I saw Ryan’s car.”
Emma turned toward him.
Ryan’s expression remained still.
“He parked behind me.”
“He said Victor was already dead.”
“He told me the ledger would make it look like I stole from the company.”
“He said you and Lily would lose everything.”
“So you waited.”
“Ryan took Victor’s briefcase.”
Emma looked toward Ryan.
“You were there.”
“No proof.”
Diane pointed at him.
“You opened the passenger door.”
“You took the ledger.”
Ryan looked amused.
“Three years ago.”
“On an unlit road.”
“In heavy rain.”
“You expect anyone to believe you remember correctly?”
“I remember you checking Victor’s pulse.”
Emma stopped breathing.
Ryan had known Victor was alive.
Diane continued.
“He was making a sound.”
“He tried to move.”
“I said we needed an ambulance.”
“Ryan told me the police would discover everything.”
“He said I would go to prison.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“You left Dad alive in that car.”
Diane collapsed into a chair.
“I was afraid.”
“You let him die because you were afraid of losing a house.”
“No.”
“I thought help was coming.”
“You waited twenty-three minutes.”
Emma’s voice broke.
“Do you know how long that is?”
Diane reached toward her.
Emma stepped away.
Lily stood beside the wall.
She looked physically ill.
“Did Dad know you were there?”
Diane nodded.
“He looked at me.”
Lily began crying.
Ryan picked up his coat.
“This emotional performance is finished.”
Marcus blocked the door.
“You are not leaving.”
Ryan smiled.
“You cannot detain me.”
Owen spoke quietly.
“Federal agents are already outside.”
Ryan’s smile weakened.
Owen held up Diane’s phone.
“The recording establishes conspiracy to commit fraud.”
“Diane’s statement gives cause to reopen Victor’s death.”
Ryan looked toward the windows.
Blue lights appeared along the driveway.
He moved toward the kitchen instead.
Marcus followed.
Ryan grabbed a knife from the counter.
Diane screamed.
Ryan held the blade toward Marcus.
“Back up.”
Emma looked at the man she had shared a bed with for seven years.
She no longer recognized him.
“Ryan.”
He glanced at her.
“You caused this.”
“No.”
“You married me for Dad’s company.”
“I married you because Victor trusted you.”
“He never trusted me.”
“Then why?”
“Because you were the only path he left open.”
Ryan moved toward the back door.
Federal agents entered through the front.
He shoved Lily into Marcus.
Then he ran through the kitchen.
Emma followed to the porch.
“Stop!”
Ryan reached a waiting car.
Detective Pierce sat behind the wheel.
The car accelerated down the driveway.
Federal vehicles followed.
Diane stood in the doorway.
Emma turned toward her mother.
“I cannot look at you.”
Diane nodded through tears.
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
Emma walked past her.
Lily caught her sleeve.
“Please.”
Emma pulled free.
“I found you with my husband yesterday.”
“Today I learned you helped him steal from our father.”
Lily’s face crumpled.
“I didn’t know about Dad.”
“You knew enough.”
“I loved him.”
Emma stared.
“That is not a defense.”
“I know.”
“Then stop using it like one.”
Owen approached.
“The agents found Pierce’s abandoned vehicle.”
“Where?”
“Near the river.”
“Ryan?”
“Gone.”
“Pierce?”
“Gone too.”
Emma looked toward the road.
“They planned an escape.”
Owen nodded.
“Ryan may try to access the bank box before we do.”
Diane’s signature was still required.
Emma looked back at her mother.
Diane stood inside the warm dining room.
The family table remained covered with untouched food.
“Will the bank accept her signature if she is charged?”
“For now.”
“Then we go tonight.”
The bank’s private vault opened at ten thirty under a federal preservation order.
Diane signed the access form.
She did not speak to Emma.
The brass key opened box 417.
Inside was a red leather ledger.
A flash drive.
Victor’s wedding ring.
And a photograph of Ryan meeting Detective Pierce outside Graystone Bank.
The date was two months before Victor’s death.
Owen opened the ledger.
Transfers from Bennett Homes led to Graystone Ventures.
Graystone paid Pierce.
A mechanic named Paul Danner.
A private psychiatrist.
And Celeste Ward.
Emma recognized the name.
Celeste was Bennett Homes’ chief financial officer.
Ryan’s closest executive partner.
The woman Emma had trusted to manage company accounts after Victor died.
Owen connected the flash drive.
A video appeared.
Victor sat in the lake house basement.
“If Emma is watching this, Ryan moved before I could stop him.”
Emma covered her mouth.
Her father looked tired.
Angry.
Alive.
“Ryan did not begin stealing after he married Emma.”
“He approached her because Celeste Ward learned the Bennett trust could not be sold outside the family.”
Emma stared at the screen.
Victor continued.
“Ryan and Celeste have been partners for nine years.”
“Possibly longer.”
“They planned to use Emma’s marriage and Lily’s debt to gain control.”
Lily began shaking.
Ryan had not betrayed Emma with Lily.
He had betrayed both sisters with someone else.
Victor leaned toward the camera.
“There is a clause inside the Bennett trust Ryan does not know about.”
“If any trustee attempts to harm a beneficiary, voting control transfers permanently to the employees.”
Emma looked at Owen.
“Did you know?”
“Only that Victor added a final clause.”
Victor continued.
“The activation code is hidden where Emma first learned what family means.”
The video ended.
Emma stared at the dark screen.
Lily whispered, “Where is that?”
Emma thought of childhood memories.
The lake house.
Her father’s workshop.
Her school.
Then she remembered a place.
Bennett Homes began in the garage behind their first family house.
Victor taught Emma to hammer nails there.
Lily painted the office walls.
Diane brought sandwiches every Saturday.
The old Bennett house had been empty for years.
Emma looked toward Owen.
“We need to go to my childhood home.”
Owen checked his phone.
His expression changed.
“What?”
“The house is on fire.”
Emma’s blood went cold.
A second alert appeared.
May you like
A body had been found inside.
The preliminary identification belonged to Ryan Carter.
