Chapter 10 - The Quarry Tunnel

Emma ran into darkness.
“NOAH!”
No answer.
Another gunshot cracked through the tunnel.
Stone dust fell from the ceiling.
Emergency lights revealed three paths.
Footprints marked the center corridor.
Emma followed them.
Owen caught up.
“You’re bleeding.”
“I’m fine.”
“You were hit in the head.”
“My son is down there.”
They heard Pierce shouting.
A child cried.
Noah was alive.
Emma ran faster.
The tunnel opened into the abandoned quarry.
A small plane waited on a gravel strip.
Its engine was running.
Pierce dragged Noah toward it.
Celeste stood near the pilot.
Ryan emerged from another tunnel carrying a metal case.
The red ledger.
Federal agents spread along the ridge.
They could not fire while Pierce held Noah.
Emma stepped into the open.
“Let him go.”
Pierce turned.
Blood covered one side of his face.
The first shot had struck the tunnel wall.
The second had been fired at an agent.
Noah struggled in his arms.
“Mommy!”
Emma held up her hands.
“Give him to me.”
Ryan looked toward Celeste.
“We leave now.”
Celeste’s eyes moved to the case.
“You have both copies?”
“Yes.”
“And the trust authority?”
“Emma will sign at the border.”
Celeste smiled faintly.
“No.”
Ryan stared.
“What?”
“You were supposed to bring the child and the evidence.”
“You brought federal agents.”
“I did not.”
Celeste lifted her gun toward him.
“You have become expensive.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“You need me.”
“I needed your marriage.”
“That is finished.”
“You cannot access the trust without Noah’s father.”
“You are not Noah’s legal father.”
“I can prove paternity.”
Celeste laughed.
“Can you?”
Ryan stared.
Emma saw uncertainty for the first time.
Celeste continued.
“The sample used at birth was changed.”
“Why?”
“Because I never trusted you not to create a child outside our marriage.”
Emma looked at Noah.
Ryan might still be his biological father.
Celeste had merely destroyed proof.
Ryan moved toward her.
“You planned to leave without me.”
“I planned to leave with the assets.”
Pierce tightened his hold on Noah.
“What about me?”
Celeste looked at him.
“You were paid.”
The pilot raised his weapon toward Pierce.
Everyone began turning against everyone else.
Emma moved one step closer.
Noah saw her.
She touched two fingers to her chest.
Their quiet game signal.
When I say now, drop.
She had taught him during hide-and-seek.
Noah blinked.
Ryan grabbed the metal case.
Celeste aimed at him.
“You spent nine years following my plan.”
“Do not pretend you became brave tonight.”
Ryan’s face twisted.
“I gave you the Bennett family.”
“You gave me problems.”
“I killed Victor.”
The quarry became silent.
Emma stared at him.
Ryan realized what he had admitted.
Celeste smiled.
“There he is.”
Ryan shouted, “I only delayed the call.”
“You ordered Danner to damage the brakes.”
“You told me to.”
“I told you to frighten Victor.”
“You decided a dead man was easier.”
Emma’s ring transmitter remained beneath the porch.
The confession was still being broadcast through Owen’s system.
Celeste did not know.
Ryan looked toward Emma.
“This is your fault.”
“No.”
“I could have loved you.”
“No.”
“You could have trusted me.”
“I did.”
“That was the weapon you used.”
Pierce dragged Noah toward the plane.
Emma saw his finger tighten near the trigger.
“Now!”
Noah dropped.
Pierce lost his grip.
Emma ran.
A federal sniper fired.
The bullet struck Pierce’s weapon.
It flew from his hand.
Owen tackled Pierce.
Emma reached Noah.
She covered him with her body.
Gunfire erupted near the plane.
Ryan ran toward the pilot’s door.
Celeste fired at him.
The shot struck the metal case.
Papers exploded across the runway.
Red ledger pages scattered through the snow.
Ryan pulled Celeste behind the plane.
Federal agents surrounded them.
The pilot surrendered.
Celeste grabbed Ryan’s collar.
“You ruined everything.”
Ryan shoved her away.
She aimed again.
Lily’s voice rang from the ridge.
“Celeste!”
Everyone turned.
Lily stood beside Marcus.
She held Diane’s copied ledger.
Celeste stared.
“You.”
Lily lifted the book.
“This is what you want.”
Emma’s heart stopped.
Lily threw it toward the quarry edge.
Celeste ran after it.
The book slid across ice.
Celeste reached it seconds before it fell.
Lily had wrapped it around a tracking beacon and a flash-bang device.
The light exploded.
Celeste screamed and dropped the gun.
Agents tackled her.
Ryan ran toward the plane.
Emma stood.
He reached the open door.
Noah called out.
“Daddy!”
Ryan stopped.
For one second, he looked back at his son.
Emma hoped there might be something human left.
Then Ryan climbed into the plane.
He chose escape.
The pilot had surrendered, but the engine remained on.
Ryan pushed into the cockpit.
He had taken flying lessons during company trips.
The plane moved down the gravel strip.
Federal vehicles blocked the far end.
Ryan accelerated anyway.
The front wheel struck debris.
The plane turned sideways.
One wing hit the quarry wall.
The engine stopped.
Agents pulled Ryan from the damaged cockpit.
He shouted Emma’s name.
“You did this!”
Emma held Noah.
“No.”
“You finally did it to yourself.”
Pierce was arrested.
Celeste was restrained beside him.
Ryan was placed in a separate vehicle.
As agents collected the ledger pages, Owen approached Emma.
“The transmitter captured everything.”
“Ryan admitted his role.”
“Celeste admitted the conspiracy.”
Emma closed her eyes.
Victor would finally have justice.
Noah touched her face.
“Can we go home?”
“Yes.”
“Is Daddy coming?”
Emma looked toward the vehicle carrying Ryan.
“No.”
Noah began crying quietly.
Emma held him.
The happy ending had not arrived.
They were only alive.
Sometimes that was where healing had to begin.
Lily approached.
Snow covered her hair.
“You found him,” Emma said.
“Marcus found the resort flight records.”
“You followed.”
“I wanted to help.”
“You nearly got yourself killed.”
“I know.”
Emma looked at the copied ledger.
“Why did Mom give it back?”
Lily’s expression changed.
“She didn’t.”
“What?”
“I found it in her car.”
“Where is she?”
Lily looked toward the dark forest road.
“She disappeared from the medical vehicle.”
Emma’s stomach tightened.
Diane had removed her intravenous line and left while agents focused on the resort.
A note remained on the seat.
I HAVE TO FINISH WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE THREE YEARS AGO.
Emma knew where her mother was going.
Victor’s crash site.
When they arrived, Diane stood beside the concrete barrier.
She held a bottle of pills.
Emma stopped ten feet away.
“Mom.”
Diane looked toward her.
“I heard the confession on the radio.”
“Ryan killed Victor because I helped him.”
“No.”
“I waited.”
“Yes.”
“I let fear decide whether your father lived.”
“Yes.”
Diane opened the bottle.
Emma’s voice became firm.
“Do not make me explain another death to Noah.”
Diane began crying.
“I cannot fix this.”
“You cannot.”
The answer surprised her.
Emma continued.
“You can tell the truth.”
“You can accept the charges.”
“You can spend every day doing something harder than disappearing.”
“What?”
“Living with what you did.”
Diane’s hand shook.
Lily stepped beside Emma.
“Mom.”
Diane looked at both daughters.
For years, she had tried to protect them from consequences.
Instead, she had protected the people harming them.
She dropped the pills.
Then she walked toward her daughters.
Police lights appeared along the road.
Diane held out her hands.
“I’m ready to tell them everything.”
Before officers reached her, she looked at Emma.
“Can you ever forgive me?”
Emma did not lie.
“I don’t know.”
May you like
Diane nodded.
For the first time, she accepted an answer she did not want.
