CHAPTER 9: What Remains

One year later, my mother turned eighty.
We celebrated in a small garden. Only close friends. Elena. My attorney. A few neighbors.
My mother was healthy. Happy. The bruises had healed. The fear had vanished.
"You look tired," she said to me.
I smiled.
"Long year."
She took my hand.
"Your father would be proud of you. You protected our family. You brought justice to his memory."
I looked at her.
"Did you ever think we would survive this?"
She was quiet for a moment.
"To be honest? No. I thought Michael had won. I thought I would die in that house, forgotten and alone. But you came back, Daniel. You came back for me."
I hugged her.
