CHAPTER 8: Elena's Secret

After the trial, Elena came to see me.
She was different now. More confident. The stitches had healed, leaving only a small scar above her eyebrow.
"Mr. Carter," she said, "there's something I need to tell you."
I was surprised.
"What is it?"
She took a deep breath.
"Before your mother moved into your house, she hired me for a different reason. She knew about Michael. She knew he was dangerous. And she wanted someone inside the house to protect her. To watch Vanessa. She paid me to spy on them."
I stared at her.
"You were working for my mother?"
Elena nodded.
"She trusted me. And I promised I would help you. That's why I told you to check the blue sewing box. I knew what was inside."
I was silent for a moment.
Then I nodded slowly.
"Thank you, Elena. You helped us more than you know."
