CHAPTER 2: The Face Behind the Voice

I sat in that hospital room for hours, staring at the frozen image on my laptop screen.
Vanessa's face. Her voice. Her confession.
But it was the word "ours" that haunted me.
Not "mine." Not "theirs."
Ours.
Someone else was in this with her. Someone she trusted enough to share everything with.
I scrolled back through the footage, frame by frame. Looking for clues. Looking for the face I hadn't seen.
And then I found it.
Three weeks earlier, Vanessa had made another call. This time from the study. The audio was clearer.
"I need you to come over tonight. She's still refusing to sign the property transfer."
A man's voice answered.
"What's the problem?"
"She keeps talking about Daniel's father. She keeps saying she knows something."
The man laughed.
"The old woman is just trying to scare you. My father died years ago. There's nothing she can prove."
My blood went cold.
I recognized that voice.
Not because I had heard it often. But because I had heard it once, years ago, at my wedding.
Michael.
Vanessa's brother.
The brother she barely mentioned. The brother who supposedly lived across the country and had nothing to do with our lives.
My brother-in-law.
I rewound the recording and listened again.
"He doesn't suspect anything?" Michael asked.
"No. He's too busy playing hero in Saudi Arabia. He calls every few days, but I tell him she's sleeping. He believes me."
"Good. Keep it that way. Once we have her signature, everything transfers to our accounts. Then we file for divorce. Daniel gets nothing."
I stopped the recording.
Divorce.
They weren't just stealing my mother's property. They were planning to destroy my life too.
I called my attorney that night.
Not a family lawyer. A criminal attorney.
I sent him everything. The videos. The audio recordings. The forged signatures. The bank records.
He called me back at midnight.
"Daniel, this is much worse than you think."
"What do you mean?"
"I checked your mother's property records. The documents Vanessa removed from the sewing box include a power of attorney. It's dated three months ago."
I frowned. "My mother never signed that."
"Exactly. Someone forged it. And with that document, they could legally control your mother's finances. They could sell her house. Empty her accounts. And nobody would question it."
I felt sick.
"Can we prove it's forged?"
"Yes. Handwriting experts. Medical records proving your mother had a stroke and couldn't sign anything that day. But there's something else."
"What?"
The attorney paused.
"The account receiving the money… it's not Vanessa's. It's not Michael's either."
"Whose is it?"
"Yours, Daniel. Your name. Your Social Security number. They opened a bank account in your name. The money is being transferred there."
I stared at the phone.
"Someone is setting me up."
"Exactly. If this goes to court, they'll argue that you were the one controlling everything. That you used your mother's assets. That you abused her. And Vanessa will be the victim who tried to stop you."
I hung up.
For the first time, I understood what I was really facing.

My wife and her brother had not only planned to steal from me.
They had planned to make me the criminal.
