Chapter 9 - The Ledger
6:30 a.m.
The sun rose over the rolling hills of Middleburg, burning the morning mist off the pastures where my family had raised thoroughbreds for three generations.
I lay in my childhood bedroom, wrapped in crisp Egyptian cotton sheets, an IV line supplying pain medication directly into my right arm. The sharp, screaming agony in my back had subsided into a dull, heavy throb.
The door opened softly, and my father walked in, carrying a silver tray with a pot of Earl Grey tea and two fine china cups.
He set the tray on the bedside table, poured two cups, and handed one to me.
"Drink," Vance said softly. "It’s the blend your mother liked."
I took a sip, the warm bergamot steam soothing my dry throat. "What happened to Chloe’s father?"
Vance leaned back in the velvet armchair beside my bed, resting his ankles over his knee.
"David Miller was arrested at his home in Greenwich at 5:00 a.m.," Vance said, his voice completely unhurried. "Bribery, wire fraud, and five counts of tax evasion stemming from the 2022 Hudson Yards rezoning deal."
"Did Julian know?"
"Julian was the one who set up the shell companies for Miller," Vance smiled, a cold, sharp glint in his gray eyes. "Julian thought he was playing grandmaster chess, Katherine. He didn't realize I built the board he was playing on thirty years ago."
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small black leather notebook bound with a red silk ribbon, and dropped it onto my lap.
"What is this?" I asked, touching the faded cover.
"That is the master ledger of Sterling Holdings," Vance said softly. "It contains every asset, every deed, every political favor, and every piece of dirt my family has collected since 1952. Your mother gave it to me on our wedding day."

He looked at me, his eyes softening just a fraction.
"I gave Julian five years to prove he was worthy of sitting at this table, Katherine," Vance said. "He proved he was nothing more than a thief with good manners. Now, the ledger belongs to you."
