Chapter 15 - The New Board

6:00 p.m.

The top floor of the new Sterling Tower on 57th Street overlooked the entirety of Central Park, its floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering an unobstructed view of the Manhattan skyline beneath a golden twilight sky.

Inside the executive boardroom, twelve of the most powerful institutional investors in the country sat around a thirty-foot table made of polished Virginia walnut.

At the head of the table sat my father, sipping his Earl Grey tea from a fine china cup.

The heavy oak doors clicked open.

I walked into the room, wearing a midnight-blue tailored suit, my hair resting smoothly over my shoulders, carrying the black leather master ledger beneath my arm.

Every single investor at the table stood up instantly.

My father looked up, a soft, proud smile spreading across his face as he gestured to the empty leather chair at the head of the table.

"Gentlemen," Vance Sterling said, his voice echoing through the quiet room with absolute authority. "The board will now come to order. My daughter, Katherine, will be taking the chair."

I took my seat at the head of the table, opened the black ledger, and looked out over the city that my family had built—and defended—for generations.

"Let’s begin," I said.
