CHAPTER 1: THE NIGHT HE LET GO

The rain came down so hard that night it blurred the city into nothing but shadows and headlights.
Sophie Blake stood on the pedestrian bridge gripping the cold metal railing while tears mixed with the water running down her face. Across from her stood her husband, Ethan, the man she had loved for nearly ten years.
Or thought she had.
"You've been sleeping with her for two years?" Sophie asked.
Ethan didn't answer immediately.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
Finally, he sighed.
"I didn't plan for this to happen."
Sophie's laugh came out broken.
"That's what you're worried about? Planning?"
The divorce papers sat inside her purse.
Unsigned.
Hours earlier she had still hoped they could save their marriage.
Now she knew better.
The woman wasn't just a random affair.
She was Lauren Reed.
Ethan's business partner.
The same woman who had spent holidays in their home and called Sophie her friend.
The realization made her physically sick.
"You both lied to me every day."
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
"It's over, Sophie."
"No."
She stepped closer.
"You don't get to say it's over."
Lightning flashed overhead.
For a moment, Ethan's face looked unfamiliar.
Cold.
Impatient.
Almost annoyed.
As if her heartbreak had become an inconvenience.
Then Sophie's phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Anonymous.
Attached was a photograph.
Sophie opened it.
Her blood turned to ice.
It showed Ethan and Lauren standing beside company documents.
Documents transferring ownership of several assets.
Assets that legally belonged to Sophie.
"What is this?"
Ethan's expression changed instantly.
The panic lasted only a second.
But Sophie saw it.
And suddenly she understood.
The affair wasn't the only betrayal.
Someone had been stealing from her.
For months.
Maybe years.
She backed away slowly.
"Ethan..."
His eyes narrowed.
"Let me see your phone."
"No."
"Sophie."
"No."
The wind howled.
Rain hammered the bridge.
Then Sophie took another step backward.
Her foot slipped.
The damaged railing behind her groaned.
She grabbed for support.
The metal snapped.
For one terrifying moment she dangled above the rushing river below.
"Ethan!"
She screamed.
Their eyes locked.
He could reach her.
He was close enough.
All he had to do was grab her hand.
"Ethan, please!"
For one second...
Two seconds...
Three...
He didn't move.
And then Sophie fell.
The river swallowed her whole.
The last thing she saw before darkness consumed her was Ethan standing above the water.
Watching.
Not jumping.
Not helping.
May you like
Just watching.
And by sunrise, the entire city believed she was dead.
