Chapter 8 - The Other Child

Vanessa knew.
Not at first.
Then she remembered.
A photograph Preston once showed her.
A little boy.
Maybe four.
He claimed the child belonged to a friend.
Ruth traced school records.
Ethan Whitmore.
Age four.
Mother:
Amelia Hart.
Father:
Blank.
Emily’s chest tightened.
Preston had a son?
Or a nephew?
DNA would answer later.
But paperwork revealed something stranger.
Preston was listed as Ethan’s guardian.
Not father.
Why hide a guardianship?
Because Whitmore Holdings’ bylaws contained descendant-control provisions.
A recognized biological child of the Whitmore line could inherit legacy voting rights.
If Ethan was Preston’s son, he already had a descendant claim.
Then Emily’s unborn child was not Preston’s first.
That could affect the Mercer descendant clause too.
Emily read the trust carefully.
The 14% block went to the first child born of Emily Mercer.
Not Preston.
So Ethan did not change her inheritance.
But he could change Preston’s personal succession.
Why hide him?
Margaret finally confessed.
Ethan was Preston’s biological son.
Amelia was not his mother.
She was raising him.
The biological mother had died shortly after birth.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Who?”
Margaret looked at her.
“You.”
Vanessa laughed.
Then stopped.
“No.”
Emily stared.
Vanessa went pale.
“That’s impossible.”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“You were pregnant five years ago.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“I miscarried.”
“No.”
Vanessa’s entire body shook.
“What are you saying?”
“You delivered early.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Memory hit.
Hospital.
Sedation.
Blood loss.
Preston beside her.
Then waking to be told the baby had not survived.
Margaret continued.
“The baby lived.”
Vanessa screamed.
Not theatrically.
Broken.
“Why?”
Margaret cried.
“Preston said the scandal would destroy his career.”
“You were an employee.”
“He was engaged to Emily.”
Emily froze.
Engaged.
Five years ago.
Preston had fathered Vanessa’s child while planning his marriage to Emily.
Then hidden the baby.
Placed him with Amelia.
Told Vanessa he died.
Later resumed the affair.
The cruelty was almost too much to process.
Vanessa sank into a chair.
“My son.”
Margaret nodded.
“Ethan.”
Emily stared at Preston’s mother.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You let Vanessa believe her baby was dead.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Margaret cried harder.
“I thought I could fix everything later.”
Emily turned away.
That phrase again.
Later.
Later destroys families.
Vanessa demanded DNA testing.
Ethan’s guardian cooperated after authorities became involved.
The result confirmed it.
Preston and Vanessa were his biological parents.
Vanessa collapsed when she heard.
Then stood again.
Different.
The woman in the red dress who had ordered Emily to wash her feet disappeared in that moment.
Not absolved.
Changed.
She looked at Emily.
“I helped him humiliate you.”
“Yes.”
“I believed every lie because it made me feel chosen.”
“Yes.”
“I am sorry.”
Emily did not forgive her.
She said:
“Find your son.”
Vanessa did.
Preston learned about the DNA motion from his attorneys.
His response was pure rage.
He filed to block Vanessa’s contact with Ethan.
Why?
Because Ethan’s existence connected Preston to fraudulent medical records.
A fake death certificate had been created.
That involved Dr. Stone.
The same doctor.
Now the case included falsified neonatal records.
May you like
Preston’s control system had been operating for years.
Then Amelia Hart disappeared with Ethan.
