Chapter 4 - Project Redhouse

Preston’s attorneys tried to remove him from the mansion.

He refused to leave quietly.

Security eventually escorted him to a guest suite while the board reviewed his status.

Before the door closed, he smiled at Vanessa.

“Tell Emily where your apartment came from.”

Vanessa looked sick.

Emily waited.

“What apartment?”

Vanessa sat.

“Preston pays for it.”

“With whose money?”

“I thought it was his.”

Ruth already had the answer.

“Whitmore Holdings.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

A company apartment.

Luxury furniture.

Travel.

Clothing allowances.

All hidden as executive-marketing expenses.

Project Redhouse.

Emily opened the expense ledger.

Vanessa was not simply Preston’s mistress.

At least financially, she was a corporate asset.

Every gift had been booked through shell vendors.

Redhouse Consulting.

Redhouse Events.

Redhouse Creative.

None existed.

Millions had passed through them.

Vanessa whispered:

“I thought he was paying personally.”

Emily looked at her.

“That doesn’t make the affair disappear.”

“No.”

“But it changes the fraud.”

“Yes.”

Ruth traced the shell companies.

One led to a Cayman account.

Another to a Delaware trust.

A third to Preston’s mother, Margaret Whitmore.

Emily stopped.

“His mother?”

Ruth nodded.

“She appears to own Redhouse Holdings.”

Emily knew Margaret well.

Elegant.

Cold.

Always telling Emily that wealth required obedience.

She had never approved of the marriage.

Now Emily understood why.

Her father’s land had financed the Whitmore family’s hidden money network.

Then Ruth found a larger transfer.

Seventeen million dollars.

Destination:

VBL FOUNDATION.

Vanessa Blake Legacy Foundation.

Vanessa stared.

“I don’t have a foundation.”

“You do on paper.”

“I swear—”

Emily held up a hand.

“Stop swearing.”

“Start remembering.”

Vanessa thought.

“Preston had me sign charity paperwork last year.”

“What did he say?”

“It was for a women’s arts program.”

Ruth pulled the incorporation record.

Vanessa’s signature was real.

The foundation was hers.

Legally.

But the accounts were controlled by Preston’s CFO.

The same man who had looked terrified when the credit line froze.

Vanessa whispered:

“He was setting me up too.”

Emily looked at her.

“Maybe.”

“Or you were useful.”

Vanessa flinched.

That was Preston’s true talent.

He made everyone feel chosen while structuring them as liabilities.

Then security entered again.

Margaret Whitmore had arrived.

No invitation.

No embarrassment.

She entered the mansion wearing a silver evening coat.

“Where is my son?”

Emily stood.

“Suspended.”

Margaret looked toward Vanessa.

Then Emily.

“You’ve created enough drama.”

Emily almost smiled.

“Your son created shell companies.”

“My family created this company.”

“No.”

“My father financed the land.”

“Your family borrowed against it.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“You think a trust makes you powerful?”

“No.”

“Evidence does.”

Ruth placed the Redhouse files on the table.

Margaret stopped breathing.

Emily saw it.

“You know this name.”

“No.”

“You do.”

Margaret looked toward the stairs.

Then at Emily’s stomach.

“Your father should have left this alone.”

Emily’s blood turned cold.

“What did he find?”

Margaret lowered her voice.

“Something he never understood.”

Emily stepped closer.

“Tell me.”

Margaret’s expression became unreadable.

“Project Redhouse did not begin with Preston.”

“It began with your father.”
