Chapter 3 - The Incapacity Plan

Emily stared at Vanessa.
“You knew?”
“Not everything.”
“That sounds convenient.”
Vanessa placed her wineglass down.
“I knew Preston wanted you embarrassed.”
“I did not know about the trust.”
“Why help him?”
Vanessa looked away.
“Because he told me he was leaving you.”
Emily almost laughed.
“Of course.”
“He said your marriage had been dead for years.”
“He said you refused divorce because of the company.”
“He told you I had no power.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Emily continued.
“He told me you were obsessed with him.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
For one second, both women understood the same thing.
Preston had not created a love triangle.
He had created two narratives.
One for each woman.
Ruth entered.
“We found the incapacity petition.”
Emily turned.
“Already?”
“It was in the folder your father left.”
Ruth placed it on the table.
Drafted three months earlier.
It described Emily as emotionally unstable.
Jealous.
Paranoid.
Financially irrational.
Pregnancy hormones were mentioned six times.
Attached were statements from a private physician.
A household employee.
And Vanessa.
Emily looked at her.
“You signed this.”
Vanessa went pale.
“I signed a statement saying you confronted me once.”
“It says you feared for your safety.”
“Preston rewrote it.”
“Did you read it before signing?”
“No.”
Emily’s voice turned cold.
“Then you still signed it.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.”
The petition requested temporary authority over Emily’s trust interests.
For Preston.
If granted, he would have gained power to approve the midnight credit facility.
Emily’s inheritance would have arrived.
And immediately been controlled by the husband humiliating her downstairs.
Her father had anticipated it.
Robert Mercer had not simply left assets.
He had built a trap for anyone trying to seize them through her.
Ruth turned to the next page.
“The emergency trust clause also says any spouse seeking incapacity control without independent medical evaluation forfeits all marital claims to trust-derived assets.”
Emily looked at Preston through the library glass.
“He didn’t know?”
Ruth shook her head.
“Your father never told him.”
Emily exhaled.
For the first time that night, she smiled.
Not because Preston had lost.
Because her father had known exactly what kind of man he might become.
Then the mansion security chief entered.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
“Yes?”
“We found something in Mr. Whitmore’s office.”
He handed her a small flash drive.
“Your father’s name is on it.”
Emily inserted it into Ruth’s laptop.
One video.
Robert Mercer appeared.
Thin.
Pale.
Months before his death.
“Emily.”
Her breath caught.
“If you’re watching this, Preston tried to take control through your pregnancy.”
She covered her mouth.
Robert continued.
“I hope I was wrong about him.”
“But hope is not a governance strategy.”
Ruth almost smiled.
That sounded exactly like him.
Then Robert’s expression changed.
“Do not trust the inheritance numbers yet.”
“Why?” Emily whispered.
The recording continued.
“The shares are real.”
“The land is real.”
“But Whitmore Holdings is carrying a secret liability Preston has hidden from everyone.”
“Find Project Redhouse.”
“The key is Vanessa Blake.”
Vanessa froze.
Emily slowly turned.
“What is Redhouse?”
Vanessa’s face drained.
“I’ve never heard that name.”
Then Preston’s voice came from the doorway.
“Yes, you have.”
Everyone turned.
May you like
He looked directly at Vanessa.
“You just didn’t know what we called it.”
