Chapter 9 - Grant's Name

Nolan punched Grant.

Once.

Hard.

Security moved.

Grant raised a hand.

"Let him."

Nolan's knuckles hurt.

"She named you."

"I heard."

Grant looked shaken.

Maya replayed the video.

Elena said Catherine believed Grant signed an authorization allowing charity funds to move through a private emergency reserve.

His signature appeared on the transfer.

Grant denied signing it.

He looked at the image.

Then he understood.

"Digital signature token."

Only three people had access.

Grant.

Darius.

And Grant's executive assistant, Celeste Ward.

Celeste had left the company after Catherine died.

No one had connected her to the case.

Police found her in Vermont.

She agreed to talk.

Celeste admitted Darius used Grant's token repeatedly.

Grant had ignored security warnings because Darius was family.

She also revealed something devastating.

Catherine told Grant about missing funds months before her death.

Grant dismissed her concern.

He said Darius would never steal.

Grant closed his eyes.

He remembered.

A dinner.

Catherine angry.

Him checking emails while she spoke.

"I told her she was tired."

Nolan's anger changed shape.

Grant had not ordered the crime.

He had done something more ordinary.

He had refused to believe the person warning him.

The same mistake he later made with Avery.

Grant whispered.

"I did this twice."

Nolan answered.

"You don't get to make their pain about your guilt."

Grant looked at him.

That sentence stayed.

Then Celeste gave police a voicemail Catherine had left her on the night she died.

"Darius is here."

"Howard too."

"If Grant comes home, don't let him use the east stairs."

Why?

Nobody knew.

Until engineers inspected the Vale estate.

A stair railing had been deliberately loosened.

May you like

Someone had planned an accident for Grant too.
