Chapter 10 - The Double Plan

Darius did not only want Catherine dead.
He wanted Grant injured.
Maybe killed.
If Grant died, Darius became acting chairman of Vale Holdings under an emergency succession agreement.
Catherine had discovered the fraud.
Grant stood in the way of corporate control.
Avery stood in the way of Catherine's trust.
The whole family had become obstacles.
Grant finally stopped protecting Darius.
He gave prosecutors every corporate record they wanted.
The records uncovered offshore accounts.
Payments to Howard.
Payments to Peter.
Payments to a private clinic.
That clinic had treated Elena Mercer three days before her death.
Nolan froze.
Elena had gone there for headaches.
Her medical chart had been altered.
A sedative and anticoagulant combination could have caused catastrophic bleeding in someone with an undiagnosed vascular weakness.
The prescribing doctor had received money from Vale Strategic Services.
Nolan sat in his kitchen and stared at the report.
Grant stood near the door.
Neither man knew what to say.
Finally Grant whispered.
"I'm sorry."
Nolan looked up.
"For what?"
"My brother may have killed your wife."
"You didn't prescribe the medication."
"No."
"You ignored Catherine."
"Yes."
"You ignored Avery."
"Yes."
"Own those."
Nolan looked back at the report.
"Don't steal Darius's crimes just because guilt feels easier than helplessness."
Grant nodded.
Then Maya called.
The clinic doctor had agreed to cooperate.
He named Howard Kell.
Howard had arranged Elena's prescription.
Darius had approved payment.
The case now linked both women's deaths.
But Darius was gone.
May you like
And Avery was missing from school.
