Chapter 19 - Two Daughters
Years passed.
Avery's screaming episodes became less frequent.
Not because she was cured.
Because she became safer.
She learned to name fear.
She learned adults could hear no without leaving.
Grant learned to ask before touching.
He learned apologies did not buy instant access.
Nolan became facilities director for three Vale properties.
He remained stubbornly unimpressed by wealth.
Lily got braces.
Then complained about them every day.
Avery and Lily became inseparable.
They called Catherine and Elena their two moms in heaven.
Grant never corrected them.
The Catherine Vale Foundation was rebuilt under independent governance.
Recovered funds paid for treatment that had once been denied.
One wing was named for Elena Mercer.
Nolan cried at the dedication.
Then denied it.
Avery saw him.
"Bad minute?"
He laughed.
"Yeah."
"Good kind."
"Those exist?"
"Apparently."
Grant watched them.
The jealousy he once felt when Avery trusted Nolan had faded.
He finally understood that a child having another safe adult does not reduce a parent's place.
It expands the child's world.
On Avery's thirteenth birthday, Grant gave her Catherine's repaired bracelet.
Avery looked at it.
Then handed it back.
"I don't want to wear it."
Grant froze.
"Okay."
"I want to sell it."
"For what?"
Avery smiled.
"Three kids."
Grant began crying.
Catherine's sentence had survived.
