Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Margaret Sterling was taken into custody for questioning.

For six hours, she refused to speak.

Then Detective Reed placed the office recording in front of her.

Margaret listened to her own voice pleading with Charles.

Her perfect posture slowly collapsed.

“I did not know he would order Vivian to push her,” she said.

“You helped create the situation,” Reed replied.

“I wanted Emma frightened, not injured.”

“That does not help you.”

Margaret stared through the interview-room window.

“You do not understand my husband.”

“Then explain him.”

She asked for immunity.

The district attorney refused.

She asked for protection.

That request was taken seriously.

Margaret finally told the full story.

Twenty-one years earlier, she had worked as an administrator for Sterling Research.

Project Eve tested an experimental prenatal treatment on seventeen pregnant women.

The women were told they were receiving vitamins.

Sixteen babies suffered serious medical complications.

Some died shortly after birth.

Others lived with permanent conditions.

Only one child appeared completely healthy.

Emma.

Samuel Carter discovered that Charles had continued the trials without proper consent.

He collected the records and threatened to expose the project.

Charles arranged the laboratory fire to destroy the evidence.

“Did he kill my father?” Emma asked when Reed relayed the confession.

Margaret had not answered that question directly.

But she admitted Charles’s driver followed Samuel on the night of his fatal accident.

She also revealed why Gordon Pike had become involved.

Gordon’s younger sister had been one of the Project Eve mothers.

Her baby died after three months.

Gordon spent two decades searching for proof.

He accepted the security position at the Sterling mansion specifically to investigate Charles.

“Why protect me?” Emma asked.

“Because you were the last surviving child,” Reed said.

“And because he believed your father tried to do the right thing.”

Emma looked through the hospital window.

Reporters had gathered outside.

News of Vivian’s arrest and the recovered staircase video had already spread.

Sterling Biotech’s stock was falling.

The board suspended Charles.

Federal investigators opened inquiries into fraud, illegal experimentation, and obstruction of justice.

Yet Charles had not been arrested.

He had disappeared from the mansion before officers returned with a warrant.

Police found his car abandoned near the river.

Margaret believed he had access to safe houses and private transportation.

“He won’t run forever,” she warned.

“What will he do?” Detective Reed asked.

“He will remove whatever threatens him.”

Emma understood immediately.

“The evidence.”

“And you,” Margaret said.

Detective Reed transferred Emma to a secure hospital floor under a false name.

Only essential staff knew her location.

Daniel asked to remain nearby.

Emma refused.

“I cannot trust you.”

“I can help protect you.”

“You had years to do that.”

Daniel accepted her decision.

Before leaving, he placed his wedding ring on the table.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

Emma watched him walk away.

That evening, Gordon Pike regained consciousness.

He asked to speak with Emma by video call.

His face was bruised, but his voice was steady.

“I am sorry I did not stop them sooner.”

“You saved the recording.”

“It may not be enough.”

“What else is there?”

Gordon said Samuel Carter had created a second archive before his death.

The archive contained signed consent forms, laboratory results, and recordings of Charles ordering the cover-up.

Samuel hid it somewhere Charles could never legally enter.

“Where?”

Gordon looked directly into the camera.

“He left it to you.”

Emma thought of her father’s old lakeside cabin.

After his death, the property became hers.

She had not visited in years.

Before the call ended, Gordon gave her one warning.

“Charles knows about the cabin.”

At that exact moment, the hospital lights went out.

The fetal monitor went dark.

Emergency alarms began sounding in the hallway.

Through the glass door, Emma saw a man in medical scrubs approaching her room.

He wore a surgical mask.

But she recognized the silver watch on his wrist.

It belonged to Charles Sterling.
