Chapter 10 - THE ARCHIVE OF THE DEAD
Emma entered the bank through an underground garage three days later.
Doctors strongly opposed the trip.
But the district attorney arranged medical supervision and an armed escort.
The safe-deposit room was cold and silent.
Emma placed her finger on the scanner.
A green light appeared.
The manager inserted Samuel’s brass key.
Inside the box was a sealed metal container.
Emma opened it.
The first item was a letter addressed to her.
My dearest Emma,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.
I pray it did not arrive through pain.
Emma paused as tears blurred the page.
Her father wrote that her mother, Laura, had suffered from a hereditary neurological condition.
During pregnancy, Samuel became desperate to protect their unborn child.
Charles offered access to an experimental treatment.
Samuel believed it had passed safety review.
Only after Emma’s birth did he discover that Charles had tested the treatment on other women without informed consent.
Samuel spent the rest of his life collecting proof.
He admitted his own responsibility.
He had trusted Charles.
He had helped design part of the treatment.
Though he tried to stop the project, his work had made it possible.
I cannot undo what happened to those families.

The container also held video tapes, medical reports, financial ledgers, and signed statements from researchers.
One recording showed Charles ordering staff to alter patient records.
Another showed him threatening Samuel.
“If you expose me,” Charles said, “your daughter becomes evidence.”
Samuel answered, “If you touch her, everything goes public.”
The final file concerned Samuel’s death.
He had discovered that Charles’s driver tampered with his car’s brake system.
Samuel recorded a statement the day before the crash and scheduled it to be mailed to his attorney.
But the package disappeared before reaching Helen Brooks.
Gordon Pike later recovered it from a storage room in the Sterling mansion.
The archive proved that Samuel’s death was not an accident.
When federal prosecutors reviewed the evidence, they added murder conspiracy charges against Charles.
Margaret agreed to testify in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Thomas Vale admitted helping Charles dispose of evidence.
Vivian continued insisting that Emma attacked her.
That claim collapsed when the staircase video was released in court.
The footage showed Vivian grabbing Emma’s arm, shouting at her, and shoving her backward with both hands.
It also captured Margaret warning Vivian only minutes earlier.
“Do not leave marks where anyone can see.”
The district attorney charged Vivian with aggravated assault, attempted coercion, and conspiracy.
Daniel faced charges for participating in the coercion plan and withholding evidence.
Unlike the others, he confessed immediately.
He gave prosecutors access to his emails, financial accounts, and private messages.
Among those messages was a conversation with his father.
Daniel had written, I will convince Emma, but nobody harms her.
Charles replied, Then prove where your loyalty belongs.
Emma read the message in the hospital.
It did not absolve Daniel.
But it showed the battle he had failed to fight.
A week later, Emma received permission to leave the hospital under strict bed rest.
She did not return to the mansion.
She moved into a secure apartment owned by her father’s former foundation.
Rosa came with her.
Gordon promised to testify when his health improved.
For the first time, Emma began to believe the worst was over.
Then Detective Reed called.
During a search of Charles’s private laboratory, investigators had found a schedule.
At the bottom was an appointment dated two weeks after Emma’s expected delivery.
The patient name read BABY STERLING.
