Chapter 7 - Bianca's Father's Safe

Bianca had been looking for evidence of her father's affair.

That was almost funny.

She had spent months convinced Senator Everett Vale was seeing a younger campaign adviser.

So she opened his private safe at the family townhouse.

Inside she found no love letters.

She found Eleanor Whitfield.

A folder.

Photographs.

Copies of claimant records.

A note from Gideon Rusk:

WHITFIELD DAUGHTER EMPLOYED AT THORNE HOUSE. MONITOR.

Mara felt cold.

Bianca had learned Mara was being watched before hiring her through the household agency.

"You requested me."

Bianca nodded.

"Why?"

"At first I wanted to know what your mother gave you."

"You could have asked."

"I hated you."

"For Preston."

"Yes."

"Convenient."

Bianca looked down.

Then she said something harder.

"I also liked seeing you below me."

Mara stared.

That honesty was uglier than an excuse.

Bianca continued.

"You had been his wife. I wanted the house to prove I won."

Mara almost laughed.

"You married Preston."

"Exactly."

For the first time, even Preston's name sounded like punishment enough.

"Did your father tell you to search my room?"

"No."

"You found the pregnancy test."

"Yes."

"And assumed Preston."

"Yes."

"Then slapped me at my mother's grave."

Bianca's eyes filled.

"Yes."

No justification.

Good.

Mara asked, "Why were you at the grave?"

"I followed you."

"Of course."

"I thought you were meeting someone."

"I was meeting my mother."

Bianca covered her face.

Then she said, "My father knows about the baby now."

Mara's stomach tightened.

"How?"

"Preston told him Roman said it was his."

Mara swore.

Bianca continued.

"My father is terrified Roman will use the fund records as leverage."

Roman was not supposed to be leverage.

Mara called Keane.

Bianca agreed to a formal interview.

Her lawyer arrived.

For six hours she described her father's private records, Rusk's calls, and her own role in monitoring Mara.

She faced assault charges regardless.

Cooperation did not erase the cemetery.

It defined other conduct.

Then Keane searched Senator Vale's office with warrants approved through appropriate channels.

The news exploded.

SENATOR'S OFFICE RAIDED IN HISTORIC LABOR FUND PROBE.

Mara's photograph appeared online.

Pregnant maid.

Mafia boss.

Senator's daughter.

Every headline reduced the case to the most dramatic nouns.

At the bungalow, Roman looked furious.

"Take the photographs down."

Miriam Cross said, "You do not own the internet."

"I own people who can—"

He stopped.

Mara looked at him.

Roman exhaled.

"Right."

That was the line he needed to stop crossing.

Mara said, "No threats."

"I know."

"Do you?"

He nodded.

"I'm trying."

The federal search found Senator Vale's safe.

Bianca had told the truth.

Inside were photocopies of Eleanor's records.

And one sealed envelope marked CASTELLANO.

Keane opened it under warrant.

The contents were not about Roman.

They were about his father, Salvatore.

A signed agreement from 2003.

Salvatore Castellano promised the fund administrators that dockworker families under his "influence" would stop demanding supplemental payments.

In exchange, a city investigation into Castellano trucking contracts would quietly narrow.

Roman read the copy.

His face went blank.

"My father traded their claims."

Mara said nothing.

Roman continued.

"And Eleanor went to him for help."

The betrayal crossed generations.

Then Miriam found a handwritten note in Salvatore's old correspondence.

ELEANOR REFUSES DEAL. KEEP ROMAN OUT OF IT.

Roman stared.

He had been twenty-two.

Old enough to understand the world.

Young enough that everyone still decided what he should know.

Mara said, "Ignorance isn't innocence."

Roman nodded.

"I know."

Then Keane placed another document on the table.

A beneficiary list.

Several families had signed waivers after visits from Castellano men.

One signature belonged to Luca Castellano.

Roman's brother.

The man Eleanor supposedly saved.

Luca had accepted his payment.

Then helped convince others to accept less.
