Chapter 15 - The Business Roman Could Not Inherit Cleanly

The monitor found three employees paying former union intermediaries for "consulting."

Some payments began before Roman became chief executive.

Two continued under him.

The purpose was not violence.

It was influence.

Keeping labor disputes predictable.

Keeping old relationships friendly.

Exactly the culture Eleanor had documented decades earlier.

Roman could not call it history anymore.

He fired no one immediately.

Mara was surprised.

"Why?"

"Because the monitor said preservation first."

She smiled.

"You listened."

"Do not sound shocked."

Investigators reviewed records.

Two executives were terminated for cause after due process.

One was referred for criminal investigation.

Roman's cousin Mateo resigned from the board.

The company rewrote labor relations under outside supervision.

Roman's operational leave became permanent.

He retained ownership subject to governance restrictions.

He hated it.

Then admitted the business ran fine without him.

Mara laughed for a full minute.

"Enjoying this?"

"Deeply."

He began spending more time on a legitimate restaurant group and property company with clean financing.

Miriam still reviewed related-party transactions.

Roman complained.

Mara called it romance between man and compliance.

He threatened to leave.

He never did.

Mara returned to school online.

Accounting degree.

One class at a time.

She worked part-time at Leah's dental office and later joined a nonprofit financial-controls team helping worker benefit programs reconcile claims.

The irony was not lost on anyone.

She refused interviews about Eleanor.

Then accepted one panel after a year.

Topic:

Why beneficiaries need independent access to their own records.

No Mafia glamour.

No senator gossip.

Systems.

At the event, a dockworker's widow approached.

"My husband signed one of those waivers."

Mara braced.

The woman hugged her.

Then stepped back.

"I hated your mother's family for years because I thought she helped the Castellanos."

Mara nodded.

"She did go to them."

"Yes."

"She was desperate."

"That doesn't make everything she did right."

The woman looked surprised.

"No."

Mara continued.

"But she kept copies."

The woman smiled.

"Thank God for clerks."

Mara laughed.

At home, Roman was teaching Eleanor Lucia to clap.

She was six months old and terrible at it.

Mara watched from the doorway.

For a while, she had feared loving Roman meant endorsing his world.

Then she realized she was allowed to separate man from structure without pretending structure did not matter.

Roman was still connected to a criminal legacy.

Some investigations remained.

Some associates remained people Mara would never invite into her home.

She set boundaries.

He respected more of them than he liked.

They dated slowly.

Dinner.

Walks.

Therapy.

Arguments.

No moving in.

No proposal.

At one session Roman said, "I am used to solving threats."

The therapist asked, "What do you do with discomfort?"

Roman looked at Mara.

"Apparently pay someone to make me talk about it."

Mara laughed.

Progress.

Then Preston requested permission to visit Eleanor's grave at the same time as Mara.

She almost said no.

Why?

He wanted to apologize to Eleanor.

Too late.

Mara understood the instinct.

She agreed to separate visits.

Preston went first.

Left flowers.

No note.

When Mara arrived later, she found the mud dry and the headstone clean.

She replaced the repaired silver bracelet around her wrist.

The clasp had been fixed.

No hidden key.

No secret compartment.

Just her mother's bracelet.

That mattered.

Then Bianca appeared at the cemetery entrance.

Mara stiffened.

Bianca stopped twenty feet away.

"I asked your lawyer."

Mara's phone showed the message.

Bianca had requested a five-minute conversation.

Mara had not yet answered.

"No."

Bianca nodded.

"Okay."

Then turned to leave.

Mara watched.

Boundary respected.

Maybe that was the only apology she needed that day.
