Chapter 1 - The Man in the Fog

Mara Whitfield was kneeling in the mud beside her mother's grave when Bianca Thorne slapped her hard enough to split her lip.

The first blow stunned her.

The second taught her exactly how frightened Bianca was.

Mara curled one arm over her stomach.

Seven weeks had passed since the test.

Long enough for nausea.

Not long enough for anyone to notice beneath the loose black maid's dress she wore at the Thorne estate.

Bianca stared down at her in a cream coat that probably cost more than Mara made in six months.

"Whose baby is it?"

Mara tasted blood.

She said nothing.

Bianca's husband, Preston Thorne, had once been Mara's husband.

That was the humiliation Bianca had been feeding for three years.

She hired Mara after the divorce through a household agency, then made sure Mara understood every day that she had gone from wife to servant.

Preston had not stopped it.

Sometimes silence is a form of participation.

Bianca's hand lifted again.

Then a man's voice crossed the cemetery.

"Get your hands off her."

Everything stopped.

A black sedan sat near the gates.

Two men remained beside it.

One man walked toward them alone.

Tall.

Dark coat.

No hurry.

Bianca went white.

Mara looked up.

The voice pulled a memory from a bar on the west side five months earlier.

One night.

No last names.

No promises.

A man who called himself Roman.

She had told him her name was Mara and nothing else.

He had held her afterward as if neither of them needed to explain why they were lonely.

Then morning came.

They left separately.

Mara had learned his identity only weeks later from a newspaper photograph.

Roman Castellano.

The man prosecutors called an organized-crime figure and businessmen called when they wanted problems to disappear without asking how.

Mara had never contacted him.

She had no intention of bringing a child into a world built on fear.

Now he stood three feet from Bianca.

His eyes moved from Mara's bleeding lip to the hand covering her stomach.

Something changed in his face.

Bianca recovered first.

"Mr. Castellano, this is a private family matter."

Roman looked at the grave.

ELEANOR WHITFIELD.

Then at Mara.

"You're Eleanor's daughter."

Mara forgot the pain in her cheek.

"You knew my mother?"

Roman's jaw tightened.

"For twenty-one years."

Bianca stepped back.

Mara stared.

Her mother had been a payroll clerk.

Quiet.

Church every Sunday.

Coupons in labeled envelopes.

She had never once mentioned Roman Castellano.

Bianca said, "This maid was sleeping with my husband."

Roman's eyes moved to her.

"Did you see that?"

"I found a pregnancy test in her room."

"That wasn't my question."

Bianca's face hardened.

Mara reached for the cheap silver bracelet that had snapped from her wrist during the first slap.

Roman bent first.

He picked it out of the mud.

The tiny oval charm was scratched and dull.

He stared at the engraving.

Then his face changed again.

On the back were three numbers:

4 - 18 - 02.

Mara had seen them her whole life.

She thought they were the date her mother bought the bracelet.

Roman whispered, "Where did you get this?"

"My mother."

Bianca looked suddenly frightened for a reason that had nothing to do with pregnancy.

Roman noticed.

"So did she."

Mara stood carefully.

"Why does everyone know more about my mother than I do?"

Roman placed the bracelet in her palm.

Before he could answer, tires crunched over wet gravel.

A second car stopped near the graves.

Preston climbed out.

He took one look at Mara's bleeding mouth.

Then at Roman.

Then at Bianca.

"What happened?"

Bianca pointed at Mara.

"She's pregnant."

Preston went completely still.

For one second, Mara saw the same conclusion form in his face.

Then Roman stepped beside her.

"The child isn't yours."

Preston stared.

Mara's heart slammed.

Roman had no proof.

Not yet.

But he was watching her.

As if he had just counted the months.

Mara whispered, "Roman."

His eyes dropped to her stomach.

Then back to her face.

"Is it mine?"

The cemetery seemed to disappear around them.

Mara did the only thing she had promised herself she would never do because of pressure.

She told the truth.

"Yes."

Preston stumbled backward.

Bianca made a sound like broken glass.

And Roman Castellano, the most feared man in Chicago, looked more frightened than anyone there.
