CHAPTER 3: “THE TRUTH THAT BROKE THE SILENCE”

The air didn’t just get quiet.
It got heavier.
Like something invisible had finally decided to reveal itself.
The girl’s voice came out broken but clear.
“My mom… used to work for you.”
The woman stiffened instantly.
“No.”
Too fast.
Too sharp.
But lies always sound faster than truth.
Emily turned toward her mother.
“Mom… what does she mean?”
No answer.
Not even a breath.
Just silence.
And that silence said everything.
The girl tightened her grip on the bread like it was the only proof she still existed.
“She said she lost everything after the fire.”
That word stopped the air.
Fire.
The woman’s expression changed instantly.
For the first time, she wasn’t in control.
“Stop talking,” she said quietly.
But the girl wasn’t done.
“She said you blamed her.”
Emily stepped back slightly.
“Blamed her for what?”
The woman didn’t answer.
Because the truth wasn’t something she could control anymore.
May you like
It was already standing in front of her.
In the form of a child she had never expected to see again.
