CHAPTER 13: THE CONFESSION

We went back to our hotel room.

Michael sat on the bed, his head in his hands.

I stood by the window, staring out at the city lights.

"Tell me everything," I said. "Don't leave anything out."

"I met you at the coffee shop on purpose," he said.

My blood turned cold.

"What?"

"I'd seen you in the news. I knew who you were. I knew your family was powerful. And I thought... if I could get close to you, maybe I could save myself."

"Save yourself from what?"

"From Nathan. He was blackmailing me. He had evidence of something I did years ago. Something stupid. Something I should never have done. And he was using it to control me."

"So you came after me?"

"I thought if I could help you take him down, he'd leave me alone. But then... then I actually got to know you."

"Michael—"

"I wasn't planning to fall in love with you. It just happened. And now I'm terrified that I've ruined everything."

He stood up and walked toward me.

"Sarah, I know I should have told you. I should have been honest from the beginning. But I was scared. I didn't know how to tell you without losing you."

"You should have told me."

"I know. And I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

I looked at him.

The man who had proposed to me.

The man who had promised to love me forever.

"You lied to me," I said.

"Yes."

"You manipulated me."

"Yes."

"You made me trust you."

"I know."

"Michael... how can I ever trust you again?"

He looked at me.

"Maybe you can't. Maybe you should walk away right now. But I need you to know... everything I said was true. Every moment we spent together. Every kiss. Every promise. It was all real."

I didn't know what to say.

So I said nothing.

And we stood there in the darkness, our future uncertain, our hearts broken.

I looked at Michael, and I knew he'd been telling me the truth. He'd made a stupid mistake years ago, and Nathan had been using it against him.

"You didn't just lie, Michael," I said. "You built our entire relationship on a lie."

"I know."

"But the one thing I know for sure is that people can change."

"I know."

"I changed. You can change too. I just need time. I need to know if I can trust you."

"Of course."

"I'm not going to leave you. But I need you to be honest with me from now on."

"I will. I promise."

"And I need you to understand... if you ever lie to me again, I will walk away."

"I understand."

I walked over to him and took his hand.

"Then let's start over."

"Really?"

"Really."

He hugged me, and I held him tight.

And for the first time in years, I let myself believe that people could change.

That second chances were possible.

That love could heal even the deepest wounds.

Michael didn't just get a second chance.

May you like

He got me.

And that made all the difference.
