Chapter 14 - The Clean SlateThree months later, the cherry blossoms in Central Park were just beginning to show pale pink buds along the reservoir.

Claire walked slowly along the paved path, wearing a dark gray wool coat that left plenty of room for her third-trimester belly. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and coming rain.

Marcus walked beside her, carrying a slim leather folder under his arm.

"The divorce was finalized this morning," Marcus said, keeping his pace matched to her slow, deliberate steps. "Ryan signed the waiver of parental rights in exchange for the prosecutor dropping the second-degree conspiracy count. He’ll serve eighteen months at Otisville."

Claire stopped by the iron railing overlooking the water. A light breeze stirred the surface of the reservoir, sending tiny ripples across the reflection of the Manhattan skyline.

"Did he ask to see the sonograms?" she asked.

"No," Marcus said. "He only asked if the Delaware trust would cover his legal fees."

Claire let out a short, quiet breath. "And Arthur?"

"Arthur’s lawyers are trying to negotiate a plea deal. He’s looking at seven to ten years." Marcus paused, looking at her with a gentle, measuring expression. "You're free, Claire. Truly free."

Claire placed both hands on her stomach, feeling the solid, rhythmic kick against her palms.

She didn't feel triumphant. She didn't feel victorious. She just felt the quiet, steady weight of the ground beneath her feet and the clear, cold spring air in her lungs.

"Not free, Marcus," Claire said, looking out over the city that had tried to swallow her whole. "Just ready."
