Chapter 11 - The Boardroom at 57thThe penthouse offices of Montgomery Maritime Holdings occupied the entire 50th floor of the glass tower on West 57th Street.

When the private elevator doors opened, the receptionist didn't even have time to stand up. Claire walked straight past the front desk, her dirty flats leaving faint gray slush tracks on the custom silk-wool carpet.
Arthur Sterling was sitting at the head of the twenty-seat mahogany conference table, a leather-bound folio open in front of him. Ryan was standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, chewing his thumbnail down to the quick.
Two men in tailored suits—Arthur’s corporate litigators—sat to his right, their laptops open.
Arthur looked up, his expression hardening into cold disgust as he took in Claire’s mud-stained coat and messy hair. "You look like a vagrant, Claire. Sit down. We were just finalizing the medical power of attorney."
Claire didn't sit. She tossed the certified federal filing into the center of the table. It slid across the polished wood, knocking over a crystal water glass and coming to rest directly on Arthur's open folio.
Arthur didn't touch it. He looked down at the federal seal, his jaw tightening until a muscle leaped in his cheek.
"What is this?"
"That's the revocation of your operating license for Montgomery Maritime," Claire said. Her voice didn't waver. It was flat, calm, and terrifyingly clear. "And Sarah Cole’s appointment as sole executor of the Mercer trust."
Ryan turned from the window, his face pale as chalk. "Claire... let’s talk about this in private. We’re having a child together. You can't just—"
"You tried to have me committed to a private clinic in New Jersey this morning, Ryan," Claire said, looking him dead in the eye.
Ryan’s mouth opened, then closed. He didn't deny it. He looked at his father, desperate for a cue, but Arthur was staring at the stamped document with eyes like flint.

"This filing won't hold up in state court," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing rasp.
"It doesn't have to," Claire said. "The FBI’s financial crimes unit was served with a copy of your Caymans transfer records fifteen minutes ago by Marcus Vance."
