Chapter 14 – "My Mom Wrote Me from Prison—And What She Said Changed Everything"
On the first anniversary of the fire, Evie received a letter from her mother.
It was written on prison stationery, the handwriting less elegant than before.
Dear Evie,
I've been thinking about you every day. I've been thinking about all the things I should have said, all the things I should have done differently. I know you'll never forgive me. I don't expect you to. But I want you to know that I'm trying to make things right. I've been working with the prosecutors. I've given them everything I know about your father's crimes. It's not enough to make up for what I did, but it's a start.
I hope you're doing well. I hope you're finding some peace. I know you probably don't want to hear from me again, but I'll keep writing. Every week. Because you deserve to know that someone is thinking about you.
I love you, Evie. I always have, even when I didn't show it.
