Chapter 13 – "My Therapist Told Me to Forgive Myself. I Walked Out."

Weeks passed.

Claire's trial was scheduled for the fall. Richard's was scheduled for the following spring. Both of them had been denied bail.

Evie moved out of the shelter. She'd found a small apartment in Richmond, a place of her own. It wasn't much—just a studio with a kitchenette and a window that looked out onto a brick wall. But it was hers.

She'd also started therapy. It was hard, harder than she'd expected. She had to talk about the fire. About waking up in a burning room, about the feeling of the locked door, about the realization that her parents had wanted her dead.

But it helped. Slowly, piece by piece, she started to heal.
